Yoga For Health Conditions: The Flametree Encyclopaedia

What yoga offers for over 100 health conditions, in one place

Last updated: 31 October 2026

Got a health problem and wondering whether yoga can help? Start here. This is Flametree’s growing encyclopaedia of yoga for health conditions. For each condition we bring together what the great yoga teachers and the yoga doctors say, and what modern research has found.

Most of what you will read comes from Iyengar yoga. During the 20th century, Mr BKS Iyengar was the major person who codified traditional Indian yoga, through his seminal books and widespread teaching. He also pioneered the use of props, so poses can be adapted to almost any body. His style is sometimes called modern classical yoga. It is what we teach at Flametree.

Whether you call it yoga for medical conditions, yoga for chronic illness or simply yoga for health, this yoga encyclopedia (or encyclopaedia, as we spell it in Australia) gathers it in one place, condition by condition.

What each condition guide brings together

  • Mr BKS Iyengar’s approach, from his book Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health, which sets out a yoga approach for 72 conditions.
  • The yoga doctors: medical doctors who worked with Mr Iyengar. Dr Timothy McCall, Dr Loren Fishman, Dr Krishna Raman and Dr J. T. Shah.
  • The research: the trials of yoga, breathwork (pranayama) and meditation for that condition, each in a line or three, with a link to the study.
  • How to take it further: our free ebooks, masterclasses, classes and retreats.

Some conditions have many trials. Others have few or none yet. That does not decide whether yoga has something to offer. Yoga’s own knowledge was built over thousands of years of practice and teaching, and it is tested in class every week. Where science has not yet looked, we say so plainly: not yet studied is not the same as not working.

The conditions, by body system

The list follows Dr Timothy McCall’s June 2019 list of 117 conditions where studies found yoga helpful, in his groups and with his numbers. Mr Iyengar means his book also gives an approach, and the conditions he covers that are not on Dr McCall’s list are added at the end of each group. Lines marked see are the everyday names people use, such as arthritis, knee pain or hot flushes, pointing to the condition they belong under. A full guide link means the condition has its own page here. More guides are added every week, and the links below grow as they go up.

How the guides are built

Every guide is written in our own words. We set out what each teacher and doctor says about a condition and credit them by name, with short quotes only. We do not reproduce their pose sequences: a sequence needs a teacher who can see you and adapt it, which is what a class is for.

Studies are listed where they found yoga, breathwork or meditation helped, in a small or large way. Trials of any style of yoga count, because yoga in general helps. But we mark the trials that tested Iyengar yoga, and where a study of general yoga finds little, we say it was not Iyengar yoga. Iyengar teachers train for six years or more and are independently assessed, and in our view that shows in the results. Yoga or Iyengar yoga: why the difference matters in the research.

Questions people ask

What health conditions can yoga help with?

A great many. Dr Timothy McCall lists 117 conditions where studies found yoga helpful, and Mr BKS Iyengar set out a yoga approach for 72 conditions in Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health. Together they cover more than 100 problems, from arthritis and back pain to anxiety, sleep, menopause and blood pressure. This page lists them all.

Do you need clinical trials to know yoga helps a condition?

No. Some conditions have many trials, others very few. Yoga’s own knowledge was built over thousands of years of practice and teaching, and medical doctors who trained with Mr Iyengar have described yoga approaches for many conditions science has not yet studied. Not yet studied is not the same as not working. Each guide shows which is which.

Who are the doctors quoted in these guides?

Medical doctors who worked with Mr Iyengar: Dr Timothy McCall (Yoga as Medicine), Dr Loren Fishman (Columbia University; books on arthritis, back pain, osteoporosis and sciatica), Dr Krishna Raman (A Matter of Health; Yoga and Medical Science: FAQ) and Dr J. T. Shah (Therapeutic Yoga).
