What your first foundation yoga class actually feels like
“Beginner” yoga at Flametree Darwin really means beginner. At our Darwin yoga studios, you’ll be welcomed as you come in the door. It’s foundation yoga in the high quality Iyengar style. You won’t need to know anything before you arrive. We’ll show you where to put your shoes, where to set up, and what to expect. The beginner yoga poses are simple. We use props (blocks, straps, blankets, chairs, and walls) to make every pose work for your body. Not as a shortcut — as a way of meeting you exactly where you are. Try studio or LIVE online beginner yoga, Darwin style. Wherever you are, they’re also the best value online yoga classes Australia has.
Beginners don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to be fit. You don’t need to have done yoga before. You just need to show up — and we’ll take it from there.

Why people choose Flametree Darwin region / online
29 years teaching beginners in Darwin
Chris Lalor founded Flametree 24 years ago, after 5 years teaching at another Darwin studio. She’s an accredited Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher and certified Yoga Therapist — one of only a small number in Australia.
Chris and her teachers specialise in beginners who feel stiff, who’ve never done yoga, or who’ve been told they “probably should” but haven’t found the right entry point. (Many are still practising at Flametree, years later.)
By the way, Flametree teachers are all extensively trained and closely supervised by Chris. (Plus, it takes a minimum of 3 years to even start Flametree’s Iyengar style teacher training, and then at least another 3 years to be ready to actually teach).
Simple, doable, foundational poses — no jumping into the deep end
Flametree’s teaching style has been shaped by nearly three decades of working with real beginners in real Darwin bodies. The classes don’t try to look impressive. They try to be useful. Slow, held standing poses with props, breathing work that calms the nervous system, and gentle progression that lets your body adapt at its own pace.
Over time, they will guide you to whatever further levels of yoga you choose. With the right foundation, you’ll even learn exciting and highly beneficial inverted poses.
Props that make every pose accessible
Blocks, straps, walls, chairs, bolsters. We use them not as shortcuts — but as a way of making correct alignment available to every body, at every age, with every level of stiffness.
The result is that poses that might look impossible from the outside are genuinely doable, and more rapidly than otherwise. They also help ensure your safety.
Best beginner yoga Darwin and online deal

In the Beginner yoga Darwin and online deal, your foundation yoga pass can also be used for easier classes like Gentle Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and Yoga for Backs.

Upgrade to the 20-pass starter (better per-class value)
Many people who try the 10-pass come back for more. If you already know that’s likely you, the 20-pass + 2 free is better value per class — and you can extend it further still with extra half-price add-ons. Go here to get up to 30 half price classes, and 2 FREE.
Starter props pack (for home and online yoga students)
In-the-studio students don’t need this, because props are supplied free at all locations. But if you’re joining online from home, or want a proper home setup, our starter props pack includes a yoga mat, two blocks, a strap, an eye cover, and a beginner pose poster. Plus, you can add 3 blankets, and an extra block. Free shipping anywhere in Australia.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the pass valid for?
Your pass is valid for 6 months from the date of your first class. Plenty of time to settle in, and build a habit that will make it easier to keep it up.
What if I’m really stiff or really unfit?
You’re exactly who these classes are designed for. Most new beginners arrive feeling stiff, unfit, or unsure. Props and modifications make every pose accessible. You’ll never be asked to do something your body isn’t ready for.
What if I’ve got a back, hip, knee, or shoulder issue?
Let the teacher know before class. We work with these conditions regularly. The Yoga for Backs class in particular is designed for people managing back issues — and it’s included on the same pass. (But the class is still very useful for any beginner). Also, all beginner yoga classes at Flametree have a reputation for helping with back issues.
Do I need to book in for each class?
No bookings are needed for in-the-studio classes. Once you’ve bought the pass, make a reservation just for online classes, and then we’ll send you the link to join the class.
Go to this link to make online class reservations.

Reviews of Flametree Yoga
On Google, you can see real reviews from many Flametree students. Below, we have reproduced a couple of these reviews, with nothing changed except the emphasis added. On Google, you can see the student’s names and profiles. One student says:
“A great space to learn yoga. Teachers are excellent at accommodating for each individual, very inclusive. Chris is extremely knowledgeable and helpful, was fantastic throughout my whole pregnancy. Flexibility with in person and online classes at an affordable price! What more could you want!” (Mel).
In addition, here is another more recent Google review from another current Flametree student. She says:
“I’ve been attending regular classes at Flametree for 12 months. They’ve had such a positive and transformative impact on my health and wellbeing.
I’ve struggled with chronic back pain for a few years, which has contributed to substantial weight gain, insomnia, depression, and anxiety.
Starting with the beginner program, I’ve slowly regained strength and mobility. In addition, I’ve got a sense of control over some of the spiraling effects these conditions have had.
Through regular practice, attending various workshops, and focus classes, I’ve learned to adopt a more mindful approach to movement and food choices, and have lost 30 kgs in the process.
So, a year ago I could not foresee this as being remotely possible.
Plus, the instructors at Flametree are amazing – really knowledgeable and welcoming, and the classes cater to all ages and levels of experience.”
In addition, if you wish, check out other Flametree reviews.

Fertility yoga: questions people ask
What is fertility yoga?
It is ordinary yoga chosen and sequenced with fertility in mind. More work on the hips, the pelvis and circulation through the lower abdomen, and a much bigger share of restorative poses and breathing than a general class.
It is not a separate style. It is a different emphasis.
Does fertility yoga work?
Be careful with anyone who promises a baby. What the evidence supports well is that yoga lowers stress and improves sleep, and that women going through fertility treatment report feeling considerably better for doing it.
Whether that translates into a higher chance of conceiving is harder to prove. It is a reasonable thing to do for your own wellbeing while you are in the middle of a difficult stretch.
How does yoga help fertility?
Mostly through stress. Long running stress affects the hormones that govern the cycle, and yoga is one of the more reliable ways of bringing that down.
The physical side helps too. Better circulation through the pelvis, a body that is not permanently braced, and sleep that actually restores you.
Which yoga poses are good for fertility?
Supported reclining poses that open the hips, gentle standing poses, and legs up the wall. The supported Baddha Konasana over a bolster is the one most often taught for this.
The poses to leave out are strong abdominal work, deep twists and inversions, particularly in the second half of the cycle.
Can you do yoga during IVF?
Gentle, supported yoga is generally fine and many women find it one of the few things that helps during the wait. Check with your specialist first, because their advice for your situation comes first.
Around stimulation and after transfer, keep it restorative. No strong abdominal work, no inversions, no heat.
Can too much exercise affect fertility?
Yes. Very heavy training, particularly combined with low body weight, can disrupt ovulation.
That is part of why a slower practice suits this period better than a hard one.
Is fertility yoga the same as pregnancy yoga?
No. Pregnancy yoga is for once you are pregnant, and it works around a growing bump and a changing centre of gravity.
Fertility yoga is for before that, and the emphasis is on stress, cycle health and circulation. Flametree teaches both.
How often should I do fertility yoga?
Twice a week in a class is a sensible minimum, with a short restorative practice at home on other days.
Regular and gentle beats occasional and strenuous, and that is doubly true here.
Where can I do fertility yoga classes in Darwin or online?
Flametree teaches at Woolner (near Parap), Coolalinga, Casuarina, Palmerston and the CBD, and runs the same classes online. See the class times and book here.
