6 Sunday arvos of yoga: Darwin & online, with reasons discussed & delivered
You already practise. That’s not the question.
The question is whether you’ve ever been told what’s actually happening while you do it, or been shown a wide range of extra ways to get even more from your yogic practices.
The thing you’ve probably never said out loud
You know you’re calmer, stronger, and more flexible than you were. You know that much.
But if someone asked you why, you’re not sure what you’d say. And there are other things you’ve quietly wondered about:
- Your teacher says “lift the kneecaps”, you do it, and something changes – and you don’t know what.
- You’ve been holding a standing pose for a minute for two years and never asked what the minute is for (why it’s working)
- You’ve got a favourite pose and one you’d rather skip, and you’ve never wondered why that is.
- You’re aware Iyengar yoga uses more props than anything else, and you’re not entirely sure what they’re doing.
- Someone asked you what yoga’s actually done for you and you said “oh, it’s great” and changed the subject.
You don’t need to recognise all five. If you recognised two, or none, or whatever, this series was written for you.
None of that is because you weren’t paying attention
A normal class is 60-90 minutes. There isn’t room to explain.
So a good teacher tells you what to do, and you do it, and it works – and the details of the why often gets left out. Not because it’s secret. Because there’s no time.
That’s what these six afternoon masterclasses are for.
Each one starts with half an hour on the how and why of that day’s topic – presented, discussed, questions taken. Then ninety minutes of practice with Senior Iyengar teacher Chris Lalor, putting it straight to work.
Two and a quarter hours. Long enough to set a pose up properly, adjust people, take the questions, and come back to it.
Who is teaching these masterclasses
Chris Lalor is a Certified Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher, a moderator of the panels that certify Iyengar teachers, and one of the more senior practising Iyengar teachers in Australia.
She has over thirty years teaching students at all levels, including running workshops and retreats. She has also been teaching live online for six years – so an online masterclass with Chris is not a studio class with a camera pointed at it.
There are not many teachers at this level in the country, and very few of them teach a series like this one.
What happens on each of the six Sundays
Bone strength ran on 30 August. It runs again LIVE online on Sunday 15 November – so if you have joined since, you have missed nothing.
The six run 27 September, 25 October, 8 November, 15 November, 22 November and 6 December. They are set out below by topic, starting with bones.
Sunday 15 November (ONLINE ONLY) – Darwin Yoga for BONE strength, including neck, shoulders and upper body
Pressure on the bones (‘loading’) turns out to be one of the most powerful things shaping how strong they are. Iyengar yoga creates that pressure deliberately, through gravity, alignment and resistance.
The right yoga has real potential to help head off sneaky bone density decline – and we’ll be straight with you about where the evidence is strong and where it is still thin.
We’ll work the legs, spine, neck, shoulders, arms and wrists – standing poses, balances, inversions, backbends and twists. You’ll learn how long to hold a pose for this purpose, how to sequence safely, and how to build up the upper body, which almost every exercise programme leaves out.
Bone strengthens where it is loaded, and nowhere else. Which is why the wrist matters: it is one of the first bones a woman may break, often years before a hip – and almost nothing else in ordinary life loads it. Yoga loads it in every class.

From 60, breaking a bone is almost a coin toss — nearly half of women. Bone responds to load, and a held standing pose is load, using your own bodyweight.
Sunday 27 September – How a yoga masterclass builds STRENGTH & core stability
If you’ve practised a while you’ve noticed you’re stronger and steadier. This afternoon explains how that happened, while you practise, and learn even more.
Chris will show how holding a pose keeps the muscles working even when the body appears still, and how alignment spreads the effort through the whole body instead of letting one strong area do everything.
Plus a proper look at the many dimensions of a yogic core. Hint: it’s not just the abdominals, and is not built by pulling your stomach in.

Your core is a canister, not a six-pack — a lid, a floor and walls. Pulling your stomach in trains one of the four. A held pose trains all four.
Sunday 25 October – Yoga for the IMMUNE system, including restorative yoga practice
Your blood has a pump. Your lymph doesn’t. So yoga for circulation is yoga for the immune system too.
Chris will give you a powerful tour of how and why yoga supports a better immune system, and greater wellness.
Learn how to “debug” yourself, as well as how mindfulness, community, gratitude, and yoga help you build a more powerful lymphatic system.
A gentler afternoon, and a genuinely restorative one, including doable inversions for every level of skill.

Your lymph has no pump. Your blood does — that’s the difference. It only moves when you do, and twists and inversions move it.
Sunday 8 November – QUIETENING the mind: the inner adventure & calm
Notice what happens when you come into a hard pose. I like this one. I can’t do this. Why are we holding it so long?
Those reactions seem trivial. They’re not – the same habits show up everywhere else in your life. The pose becomes a mirror.
This afternoon is about what happens when you don’t act on the first reaction, and what Patanjali worked out about all this a very long time ago.
You’ll be surprised about how we all wrestle with similar issues… over 2,000 years later. You’ll also learn “fixes” you can put to work, ongoingly.
Yoga maestro Mr BKS Iyengar said: “Life’s greatest adventure is getting to know yourself.”
Come along and learn more about why and how your yoga journey can steadily deliver that adventure.

Our minds wander nearly half the day, and we’re less happy when they do. A held pose gives it one job. Noticing it wandered is the practice.
Sunday 22 November – PRANAYAMA and breathwork masterclass
Most of us breathe around 20,000 times a day; and have never been taught how to do it even better.
Plus, most of us know little of how to use the breath for more energy, calm, insight, problem solving, creativity, and more.
Chris will cover a range of breathwork techniques; including what each one is for, and why the nose matters much more than you’d think.
Among other things, by the time the masterclass is over, Chris will be able to tell you the extent to which your chest and breathing is delivering for you, and what are some further steps to take to make them work dramatically better.
Ninety minutes of guided practice with a senior teacher guiding, inspiring, and coaching on the breathwork and breath retention practices that have become one of the most popular trends of the last decade.

Breath: the only automatic system you can also drive. Your heart won’t take instructions. Your breath will — and that is the door pranayama opens.
Sunday 6 December – Yoga for HIPS masterclass
The hip is the largest weight-bearing joint in the body, and the pelvis is the fulcrum everything else moves around. Which is why hip work so often helps the lower back too.
We’ll look at what actually changes in the hips over time – and why the deep muscles that steady you respond best to work done on your feet, plus how supported floor work complements that.
Whether you’ve still got your own hips, or already got some metal bits, this masterclass will help you maximise what you can do with them… now and for decades to come.

The hip is the largest joint you own, and the pelvis turns everything else. Deep muscles steady a hip — and standing poses reach them.
More about the 15 November bone strength masterclass
Bone strength opened the series on 30 August, and it is the one people most often want twice. So we are running it again, live online, on Sunday 15 November.
If you joined the series after August, this is your bone strength masterclass – same material, live, with questions taken as they come. Nothing has been missed.
And NEW spotlights on particular poses for bones will even be added.
If you were there in August, come again anyway, online. It is included at no extra cost, and this is material that lands better the second time. You will also have had two and a half months of practising it.
Remember, this one is online only. The studio sold out in six days and we are not squeezing more into the room – but there’s space for everyone online.
Joining online: what it’s actually like
The studio filled in six days. Online is not the leftover option – it’s how a growing number of Flametree students prefer to practise, including people who live ten minutes from the door.
Here’s what you get:
- The same session, at the same time, live. Not a video. Chris sees you and corrects you.
- Ongoing video access, in your Flametree video library. Miss a Sunday, watch it later. Come back to any of them in three years’ time.
- The same written notes after every session.
- No drive, no parking, no traffic. You roll out your mat where you are.
- Use your own props, improvise, or use none. Chris explains alternatives for everything. If you’d rather have the real thing, there’s a prop pack here.
Flametree has been running live online classes for six years. This isn’t an experiment.
“Flametree Yoga’s range of online yoga classes is exceptional and they are conducted so well that you feel like you are in the studio with the teacher.” – Dee
“I am completely intrigued by the way it works. I love all the subtleties and details that make a difference… I find it amazing that I have learnt so much, being hundreds of kilometres away.” – student, Alice Springs
Start times around Australia
Darwin doesn’t do daylight saving, so the eastern states shift an hour partway through the series.
| 27 Sep | 25 Oct, 8, 15 & 22 Nov, 6 Dec | |
| NT | 2.30pm | 2.30pm |
| QLD | 3.00pm | 3.00pm |
| SA | 2.30pm | 3.30pm |
| NSW, VIC, ACT, TAS | 3.00pm | 4.00pm |
| WA | 1.00pm | 1.00pm |
Each masterclass runs two and a quarter hours. And if a Sunday doesn’t work, ongoing video access, in your Flametree video library.
What you get from yoga masterclasses that you don’t get from classes
Time. At two and a quarter hours, Chris can set a pose up, watch you do it, correct it, and have you do it again. That doesn’t fit into a normal class, whatever the length.
The reasons. Half an hour of proper explanation before every practice, drawn from deep research and from thirty years of teaching. You’ll practise differently once you know why. Chris Lalor is a Certified Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher and a Moderator of the independent panels that certify Iyengar yoga teachers — one of the more senior practising teachers in Australia. Don’t miss an opportunity to spend time with her.
Something to take home. Written notes after each session, plus ongoing video access in your Flametree video library – so what you learned in September is still there in December, or whenever.
What Flametree Yoga students say
From the first masterclass, on 30 August:
“I attended Flametree’s first in a series of masterclasses. It was fantastic. The first one was on loading the bones, so lots of different weight bearing exercises. Chris makes sure there are doable poses for everyone and all explained well. The 2 1/4 hours just flew and am so looking forward to the next one.”
– Fiona
“I really enjoyed the masterclass on bone health. Having osteopenia [low bone density] myself, it made me realise how important it is to ‘work’ my bones, particularly as I get older. I definitely came away feeling like I had learned some valuable information. The best bit was the 90 mins of supportive practice. Looking forward to the next one.”
– Kaitlin
“Classes often have a theme and always have a logic that takes us from active to wind down – always with a fantastic blend of challenge, stretches and breathing exercises – along with really helpful Iyengar philosophy. I owe a great deal to Flametree – fitness, optimism, can-do attitude are all benefits that I have experienced – and courage!”
– Karen
“You do it well at Flametree. Three things strike me: intelligent use of props. Precise instructions. An experienced and highly-trained teacher, who is also ‘of an age’ – ie understanding the changing capabilities of the older student.”
– Danny Slater, Adelaide
“Initially, I attended at the studio, and then when I moved, I went online. Flametree changed my life. It’s all about the quality of instruction from the teachers, their training and understanding, and how they pass that on. It has helped me to practise yoga and gain a better understanding of my body, how it moves, and how I can improve it. As well as a quieter mind to help me deal with life in general.”
– Gillian
“I had many years away from yoga & kind of felt I may have missed the boat. Flametree Yoga has led me slowly & surely back to strength, stability & confidence. No more back issues, up & down ladders again with ease, better sleep & lowered stress.”
– Sharon, Coolalinga Darwin.
“…yoga classes from home, and in addition access classes from a library whenever it was convenient to the student. I cannot recommend The Flame Tree Yoga School too highly!”
– John

Each Iyengar yoga masterclass 2026; why this way
Here’s some of what makes an Iyengar yoga masterclass approach different, and why it suits this kind of afternoon:
- Props support you rather than push you, so a long hold is possible without strain
- Precision means you can be told exactly what to do, and feel what changes when you do it
- Teachers train for years rather than weeks, so the corrections are informed, and built on authentic yoga
- Sequencing is built for real bodies – including stiff ones, older ones and ones with a history
- Precious time with a highly respected teacher more than capable of delivering a transformative masterclass.
No heat, no music, no competition with anyone. Nobody watching what anyone else is doing. Just working together on your body, mind, and wellness.
What changes if you come along
By 6 December you’ll have done thirteen and a half hours of properly taught practice, and you’ll know why each part of it works.
Most people find that changes how they practise afterwards – what they do, how they do it, and their motivation to do it.
Or it’ll be December, and the same questions, or motivation shortcomings, you’ve been quietly carrying, will still be the same questions.
That’s genuinely the whole choice.
Come along and get almost half of the tuition hours you’d get during Flametree’s highly regarded Bali retreats.
Questions about our Darwin & online yoga masterclasses 2026?
Do I have to come to all six? The series is sold as the whole set, and it’s built to build. Each afternoon stands alone, but they will each build on each other steadily.
I joined after 30 August. Have I missed the bone strength masterclass? No. It runs again live online on Sunday 15 November, and you have ongoing video access to the August one in the meantime. Nothing is lost either way.
Can I come to the 15 November one in the studio? That session is online only. The studio sold out in six days and we cannot add to the room without spoiling it for the people already in it. Everyone is welcome online, including students in the Greater Darwin region.
What if I’m away for one? Ongoing video access, in your Flametree video library. That’s exactly why the video access is included – nobody knows in August what their November looks like.
What’s the online masterclass actually like? Same session, same time, live. You’ll be seen and corrected – Chris has been teaching online for six years and knows how to do it. You get the same written notes, and ongoing video access, in your Flametree video library. Some Flametree students who started in the studio and later moved interstate have stayed online for years since. One student who lives ten minutes from the studio chose online for this series.
Do I need props for the online masterclasses? No. Chris explains improvised alternatives for everything – books, a belt, a firm cushion, a dining chair. If you’d rather have the proper kit, the prop pack is here.
What if I can’t make one of the Sundays live? Ongoing video access, in your Flametree video library. That’s exactly why the video access is included.
Is two and a quarter hours too long for me? Half an hour of it is sitting down, listening and asking questions. The practice is ninety minutes, prop-supported throughout, and you can rest whenever you want. Nobody watches. Variations given as needed, and as only a certified Senior Iyengar teacher can.
I’ve only been practising six months. Is this too advanced? With 6 months of yoga under your belt, you’ll be fine. Plus, everything is adjusted, as needed, with props. All you need is enough practice to know your way around a pose – not to be good at it.
Who is this not for? If you’re brand new to yoga, start with the beginner classes and come to this next year – you’ll get far more from it. If you’re unsure about your situation, ask us and we’re happy to chat, and help.
Join all six Sundays online – Add To Cart above.
