Do your legs fizz, crawl or ache the minute you sit down for the evening? Do you have to get up and walk, just as you are trying to fall asleep? That urge to move is restless legs, and its medical name is restless leg syndrome (RLS). It is worse at rest, worse in the evening and at night, and it steals sleep. Here is the good news: yoga has been tested for restless legs, and the yoga that was tested was Iyengar yoga, the style we teach in Darwin. This guide brings together what Mr BKS Iyengar, Geeta S Iyengar, Dr Timothy McCall and the research say about what helps restless legs. Last updated: 1 November 2026.

Does yoga help restless leg syndrome? The short answer
Yes. Yoga helps restless leg syndrome. In a 12-week trial, adults with moderate to severe restless legs who did gentle Iyengar yoga had bigger drops in their symptoms than people who watched educational films, and 77% of those who finished the yoga were down to mild or minimal symptoms, against 24% in the film group. In an earlier 8-week pilot, symptoms fell to mild or minimal in 9 of the 10 women who finished. Sleep, stress and mood improved too. And the more home practice people did, the more their symptoms fell. These trials are small, and they all come from one research group in the United States, but every one of them used Iyengar yoga.
That matters. Most yoga research tests “yoga” of many styles, taught by teachers with very different training. The restless legs trials were taught by certified Iyengar teachers, and in our view that is part of why they did so well. Why the kind of yoga matters.
The bottom line: five key moves for restless legs
- Go to a gentle Iyengar yoga class, once or twice a week. The trials ran 8 to 12 weeks, with 75-minute classes. Give it that long.
- Do a little at home, most days. In both main trials, the more minutes of home practice people did, the more their restless legs eased. The 12-week trial asked for 30 minutes on days without a class. Your teacher shows you what to do.
- Settle the legs before bed. Geeta S Iyengar taught that a weight across the thighs helps restless legs settle, and she called Legs Up The Wall “nectar”. Quiet, supported poses suit the evening.
- Add pranayama (yoga breathing). A slow, soft breath out calms the nerves and the mind. Restless legs and a racing mind feed each other at night, and the trials found less stress and better mood with yoga.

Iyengar yoga is the style we teach at Flametree. During the 20th century, Mr BKS Iyengar was the major person who codified traditional Indian yoga, through his seminal books and widespread teaching. He also pioneered the use of props, so poses can be adapted to almost any body. His style is sometimes called modern classical yoga. This guide is part of our encyclopaedia of yoga for health conditions.
This guide in short
- Mr BKS Iyengar: he wrote no course for restless legs, but his own nights of shivering, restless legs, and the weights he rested on them, are how sandbags came into Iyengar yoga, in a story told in the tradition.
- Geeta S Iyengar: a weight across the thighs settles restless legs; Legs Up The Wall cools the brain and nerves; a slow, soft breath out.
- Dr Timothy McCall: restless leg syndrome is no. 96 on his list of conditions helped by yoga. His book has no chapter on it, but it comes up in his chapters on sleep and fibromyalgia.
- The research: 12 studies listed below. Every yoga trial for restless legs so far used Iyengar yoga.

Restless Legs And Yoga On One Page
Four sources, one answer: settle the legs, calm the nerves, practise a little often.
His own restless, shivering legs at night led him to rest weight on them. Weights became an Iyengar prop.
A weight across the thighs settles restless legs. Legs Up The Wall cools the brain and nerves.
Restless legs is no. 96 on his list. Restorative poses and pranayama belong in the evening.
Iyengar yoga cut restless legs symptoms and improved sleep, stress and mood. More home practice, bigger drop.

What is restless leg syndrome?
Restless leg syndrome is an uncomfortable urge to move the legs, often with odd feelings in them: crawling, tingling, pulling, fizzing or aching. Moving eases it for a while. Sitting or lying still brings it back. It is worse in the evening and at night, so it gets in the way of falling asleep and staying asleep. A review in Sleep Medicine Reviews puts it at 2 to 4% of adults in Europe and North America.
People often call it restless legs at night, jumpy legs or the fidgets. It is not the same as a night cramp, which is a sudden, hard, painful tightening of a muscle, usually the calf. Both can wreck a night, and the yoga approach to both starts with calm, well-stretched legs.
Researchers are still working out the causes. It is common in people on kidney dialysis, and the Innes research group has called for yoga trials for restless legs in pregnant women and new mothers. If you take medicine for restless legs, always follow the directions of any doctor you are consulting. Yoga sits alongside whatever else you do.
The Evening Loop
Why restless legs wear people down, and where yoga came in. A simplified picture.
1. Still in the evening
The urge to move builds when you sit or lie down.
2. Broken sleep
Getting up to move, again and again, cuts into the night.
3. Tired and stressed
A short night leaves you worn, tense and low the next day.
4. Busy nerves at bedtime
Stress and a racing mind make it harder to settle the next night.
Where yoga came in: in the Iyengar trials, symptoms, sleep, stress and mood all improved. Every link in the loop moved the right way.

“Contraction brings tension to the nerves; release brings freedom.”
What did Mr BKS Iyengar teach about restless legs?
In short: he wrote no course for restless legs, but he knew restless, shaking legs at night from his own life, and weight on the legs is part of the Iyengar method because of it.
- No restless legs course. In Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health, Mr Iyengar sets out a yoga approach for 72 health conditions. Restless legs is not one of them. The nearest are his courses for varicose veins (p. 267), where tired, aching legs are rested and raised rather than worked hard, and for insomnia (pp. 362 to 363), built on forward bends, supported inversions and supported bridge-type poses, and ending with breath practice.
- In Light on Yoga, his appendix of poses for ailments has no entry for restless legs either. It does have entries for insomnia (p. 426) and for the legs (p. 427).
- A calm brain, an active body. He held that the brain should be calm while the body is active, and he warned that too much passive practice can leave a person restless (p. 181). In our view this fits restless legs well: work the legs well in the day, and settle them in the evening.
- Three kinds of sleep. In Light on Life he describes sleep that is dull, sleep that is restless, and sleep that is light and fresh (Kindle edition, pp. 157 to 158). That is about sleep in general, not this condition, but it is the sleep people with restless legs want back.
We do not publish his sequences. A sequence needs a teacher who can see your legs and adapt each pose, which is what a class is for.

“Slow, soft, quiet exhalation so the brain cells quieten.”
What did Geeta S Iyengar say about restless legs?
In short: put a weight across the thighs, turn the legs up the wall, and let the breath out go slow and soft.
Geeta S Iyengar, Mr Iyengar’s daughter, taught beside him in Pune for decades and wrote Yoga: A Gem for Women. She visited Australia three times, in 1996, 2003 and 2009, and Chris Lalor, Certified Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher and certified Yoga Therapist, went to all three. Chris’s notes of those classes hold Geeta’s points on restless legs, in our words:
- A weight across the thighs. Restless legs keep you awake, Geeta said. A folded blanket or a bolster laid across the thighs helps the legs settle, so the mind stops going back to them. Then the chest lifts and the breath comes more easily.
- Legs Up The Wall, “nectar”. She called Legs Up The Wall Pose (Viparita Karani) “nectar for those who do it”. Turning the legs up, she said, cools the brain and cools the nerves. The most restful version is the simplest: legs up the wall, the body over a bolster, eyes closed.
- A busy brain at bedtime. After a long, busy day the brain stays busy and sleep will not come. She taught supported, quiet poses with the eyes covered, so sleep comes more easily afterwards.
- Slow, soft breath out. A long, soft breath out, with a pause after it, quietens the nerves. “Do not fight with the breath,” she told her students.
- Rest has layers. In Corpse Pose (Savasana), first the body is placed well, then the nerves soften, then the mind.
Her book Yoga: A Gem for Women has no section on restless legs. It lists the breath practice Surya Bhedana for “restlessness” (p. 323), but that is a restless mind, not restless legs, and we do not apply it here.
Three Ways Geeta Iyengar Settled Restless Legs
From her classes in Australia, as Chris Lalor recorded them.
A folded blanket or bolster across the thighs. The legs settle, and the mind stops going back to them.
Legs Up The Wall over a bolster, eyes closed. She called it nectar: it cools the brain and the nerves.
Slow, soft, quiet. A pause after each breath out. Never fight the breath.

Weight and support together: sandbags on the feet and pelvis, with the legs resting over a bolster and chair.
A story: Mr Iyengar’s restless nights
Early in his teaching life, Mr Iyengar cycled long distances every day to reach his students. At night his legs would shiver and his whole body felt restless. To get relief, he rested rolled-up mattresses on his legs, with a drum of water on top. Later he saw some of his students had the same restless, shaky legs, and it made them anxious. He tied their legs together with a cloth and put some weight on them. By his account, the shaking stopped and they felt great relief. That is how weights came into Iyengar yoga.
Source: a story told in the Iyengar tradition, as retold in our post Yoga Sandbag: Why Iyengar Yoga Uses Weights To Help You Let Go. We have not yet traced the book it first appeared in.
“Relaxed sleep is far superior to tense or anxious sleep.”
What does Dr Timothy McCall say about restless legs?
In short: restless leg syndrome is on his list of conditions helped by yoga, and his sleep chapter puts calming, restorative practice in the evening.
Dr McCall is a US medical doctor and yoga therapist, author of Yoga as Medicine and former medical editor of Yoga Journal. His points, in our words:
- On the list. His June 2019 list of 117 health conditions helped by yoga puts restless leg syndrome at no. 96. His book has no chapter on it.
- It travels with poor sleep. In his insomnia chapter, restless leg syndrome is one of the things that can sit behind a bad night. In his fibromyalgia chapter, he notes that people with fibromyalgia often have restless legs as well.
- Active in the day, restful at night. His sleep expert in that chapter is Roger Cole, PhD, a certified Iyengar yoga teacher and sleep scientist. He suggests more active yoga after work, and restorative poses with pranayama in the evening, closer to bed. Too hard a practice too close to bedtime can keep you awake (his view).
- Night cramps. For a night calf cramp, the book suggests lying in a lying-down Mountain Pose and drawing the ankles and toes towards you, so the calf lets go (his claim). Regular practice, it says, may make cramps less likely. That is for cramps, not restless legs.
Other yoga voices on restless legs
- Dr Krishna Raman, Dr Loren Fishman and Dr J. T. Shah, three medical doctors who worked with Mr Iyengar, have no section on restless legs in the material we hold. Dr Shah lists less swelling of the feet and legs among the effects of Shoulder Stand, which is circulation rather than restless legs. Our circulation guide covers heavy, aching legs.
- Chris Lalor uses weights on the thighs and Legs Up The Wall in restorative classes, as Geeta taught. Students often say the weight helps them feel where they hold tension and let it go. Our post on the yoga sandbag tells more.
“Good sleep makes consciousness brilliant. Poor sleep leaves it tarnished.”
What does the research say about yoga for restless legs?
In short: gentle Iyengar yoga cut restless legs symptoms and severity, and improved sleep, stress and mood. Reviews that include those trials agree that yoga improved sleep-related outcomes, and that regular exercise helps restless legs too. The yoga trials are small and come from one research group, so bigger trials are the next step. Why it matters that this was Iyengar yoga.
The Research At A Glance
Four studies that sum up the evidence. All of them, with links, are listed below.
Iyengar yoga cut restless legs symptoms more than educational films did. Innes 2020: 41 adults, 12 weeks. 77% of yoga finishers were down to mild or minimal symptoms, against 24% with the films.
Restless legs symptoms fell to mild or minimal in 9 of 10 women. Innes 2013: an 8-week Iyengar yoga pilot. Sleep, stress and mood improved too.
Yoga improved sleep, mood, anxiety, stress and blood pressure in older women with restless legs. Innes 2012: 20 women with restless legs, 8 weeks, compared with educational films.
Regular exercise eased restless legs. Aukerman 2006: 12 weeks of exercise three times a week, compared with no programme.
Every study is listed in full in this section, with a link to read it.
Iyengar yoga trials for restless legs
These trials tested Iyengar yoga taught by trained Iyengar teachers. In the 12-week trial, every yoga teacher was certified in Iyengar yoga with at least 5 years of experience teaching adults with health conditions, and the programme was reviewed by a senior Iyengar trainer. The earlier programme was designed and taught by a senior Iyengar teacher with more than 30 years of experience. All of them come from one research group, led by Dr Kim Innes and Dr Terry Kit Selfe in the United States, and all are small. They are still the best yoga evidence for restless legs anywhere. Why the kind of yoga matters.
- Yoga cut restless legs symptoms and severity more than an educational film programme, with bigger gains in stress and mood. 77% of the people who finished the yoga were down to mild or minimal symptoms, against 24% in the film group, and none of the yoga group were still in the severe range. The more home practice, the bigger the drop in symptoms. Twice a week for 4 weeks, then once a week for 8 weeks, plus 30 minutes at home on other days. Innes 2020, a randomised trial of 41 adults with moderate to severe restless legs, in the US. Read the study.
- Restless legs symptoms fell sharply, to mild or minimal in all but one of the 10 women who finished, and none were still in the severe range. Sleep, stress and mood improved too. Women who did more home practice had bigger drops in symptoms. A gentle 8-week Iyengar programme, two classes a week plus home practice. Innes 2013, a pilot study of 13 women with moderate to severe restless legs (10 finished), in the US. Read the study.
- Yoga improved sleep quality and mood, and lowered insomnia, anxiety, stress and blood pressure, more than an educational film programme did. Eight weeks. Innes 2012, a randomised trial in 20 older women with restless legs, drawn from a larger trial of 75 women, in the US. Read the study.
- The Iyengar programme worked in practice: 73% finished, people came to 81% of yoga classes, and every yoga group member who answered said they would likely keep practising. 75-minute Iyengar yoga classes and a 30-minute home routine. Selfe 2022, the feasibility report on the 12-week trial of 41 adults. Read the study.

Reviews that include yoga
- Yoga improved sleep-related outcomes in restless legs, and exercise, compression devices and acupuncture eased severity. Harrison 2019, a review of 11 randomised trials of approaches other than medicines. Read the study.
- Yoga improved problems that come with restless legs, such as poor sleep and low mood, and exercise training eased symptom severity. Xu 2018, a review of 18 studies of complementary therapies. Read the study.
- The studies showed a consistent trend towards milder restless legs with exercise, yoga, massage and acupuncture, and no harms from yoga. Guay 2020, a scoping review of 24 studies. Read the study.
- Regular physical activity is recommended for restless legs, and early yoga studies are promising enough to call for larger trials. Bega and Malkani 2016, a review of mind-body, lifestyle and nutrient approaches. Read the study.
Exercise and relaxation
These are not yoga trials. They show that regular movement and deliberate relaxation help restless legs, and yoga brings both into one class. Iyengar yoga has not yet been tested against exercise for restless legs. Why it matters.
- Restless legs symptoms eased significantly with a 12-week exercise programme, compared with no programme. Aerobic and lower-body strength training three times a week. Aukerman 2006, a randomised trial (41 recruited, 23 finished), in the US. Read the study.
- Exercise training eased restless legs, depression and fatigue in people on kidney dialysis. Song 2018, a review of 15 randomised trials. Read the study.
- Restless legs severity fell by 58% with six months of progressively harder cycling during dialysis sessions, while easy cycling with no resistance did not cut it significantly. Giannaki 2013, a randomised trial of 24 people on kidney dialysis. Read the study.
- Progressive muscle relaxation (tensing then letting go of each muscle group) lowered restless legs scores and leg cramps and improved sleep, compared with usual care alone. Elfahl 2025, a randomised trial of 117 people on kidney dialysis. Read the study.
Pranayama, meditation and mindfulness
No trial has yet tested pranayama, meditation or mindfulness on their own for restless legs. Not yet studied is not the same as not working. Breathing and relaxation were part of the Iyengar programmes above, and the trials found less stress and better mood. In our view, a held yoga pose is itself a practice of attention. The pranayamas we teach are staircase (Viloma), ocean (Ujjayi), alternate nostril (Nadi Sodhana), humming (Bhramari) and a gentle shining skull breath (Kapalabhati), each taught slowly and step by step. “Breathwork” and “mindfulness” are loose words, so we say which breath is taught. Why the kind of breathing matters.

Restless legs: for men
In short: restless legs affect men too, and men do far less yoga.
- Men get it too. In the exercise trial above, 39% of the people who started were men, and in the 12-week Iyengar trial about one in five who finished were men.
- Men do far less yoga. In a national survey of 2,567 Australian yoga practitioners, 85% were women.
- What men can do: come to a gentle beginner class and give the legs a good day’s work, then a quiet evening. Our yoga for men page covers sport and life after 40. Bring a mate or come alone, but give it 12 weeks.
- 85% of Australian yoga practitioners surveyed were women. Penman 2012, a national survey of 2,567 practitioners. Read the survey.
How this comes together in a Flametree class
Everything above points the same way, and it is how we teach.
- Legs worked well: standing poses build firm, strong legs. Geeta always began with the legs.
- Legs settled: supported poses with weight across the thighs, legs up the wall, and long rest at the end.
- Breath and calm: every class ends in rest, and our pranayama classes go further.
- Classes adapted to the people in them. No one-size-fits-all. Tell your teacher your legs get restless, and the poses are chosen for you.
- A practice for every kind of day: our gentle yoga and restorative yoga classes suit tired days and evenings.
- Home practice, shown in class. In the trials, home practice made the difference. Your teacher gives you a short routine you can do safely.
Classes run at Woolner and Coolalinga in Darwin, and LIVE online across Australia. In the Darwin Build-Up, hot, sticky nights make sleep harder still, and a quiet evening practice helps.

Restless leg syndrome and yoga: questions people ask
What is restless leg syndrome, in plain words?
Restless leg syndrome is an uncomfortable urge to move your legs, often with crawling, tingling or aching feelings, that comes on when you sit or lie still and eases when you move. It is usually worst in the evening and at night, so it breaks up sleep. A review puts it at 2 to 4% of adults in Europe and North America.
How to stop restless legs at night: what helps?
What helps restless legs at night, from the yoga side, is to work the legs well in the day and settle them in the evening. Geeta S Iyengar taught a weight across the thighs, Legs Up The Wall, and a slow, soft breath out. In trials, a regular gentle Iyengar yoga practice cut restless legs symptoms to mild or minimal for most people who finished it.
Has yoga been tested for restless legs, and what did the trials find?
Yes. In a 12-week trial of 41 adults, Iyengar yoga cut restless legs symptoms more than educational films, and 77% of yoga finishers were down to mild or minimal symptoms, against 24%. An 8-week pilot found symptoms fell to mild or minimal in 9 of 10 women, with better sleep, stress and mood. The trials are small and come from one research group.
Why was it Iyengar yoga in the restless legs trials?
The research group led by Dr Kim Innes chose a gentle Iyengar yoga programme, taught by certified Iyengar teachers with years of experience with health conditions. Iyengar yoga adapts every pose with props, which suits people who are tired or uncomfortable. In our view as certified Iyengar teachers, the quality of the teaching is part of why these trials did so well.
How much yoga did people do in the trials?
In the 12-week trial, 75-minute classes ran twice a week for 4 weeks, then once a week for 8 weeks, with 30 minutes of home practice on other days. In both main trials, people who did more minutes of home practice had bigger drops in their restless legs symptoms.
Why does a weight on the legs feel settling?
Geeta S Iyengar taught that a weight across the thighs helps restless legs settle, so the mind stops going back to them. Mr Iyengar’s own story is that he rested rolled mattresses and a drum of water on his restless legs at night, then used weights with students whose legs shook. Weight on the legs is now a standard Iyengar prop, placed by your teacher.
Is exercise or yoga better for restless legs?
Both help. A trial of 12 weeks of aerobic and leg strength exercise eased restless legs, and reviews say regular physical activity helps. Iyengar yoga cut symptoms more than educational films, and also improved sleep, stress and mood. Iyengar yoga has not yet been tested head to head against exercise for restless legs. A good yoga class works the legs and calms the nerves in one go.
Can I do yoga for restless legs in Darwin or online?
