Dr McCall is a medical doctor and yoga therapist. Earlier, he was the medical editor of Yoga Journal. He has recently published his updated list of 117 conditions or situations helped by yoga.

In his note with the updated list, he says:
“This all started out in 2007 with the publication of my book “Yoga As Medicine”. In the “Science of Yoga” chapter, I included a list of 43 conditions that medical studies suggested yoga benefitted.
… Now it’s up to 117 conditions.
My PDF contains over 40 pages of references, listing the scientific studies by condition.”

What students have told me over 25 years of teaching
I (Chris Lalor) am not surprised by the extent of Dr McCall’s list.
It’s consistent with what I regularly see in my teaching at Flametree Yoga.
In my 25 years as of yoga teacher, the most surprising thing is that so many of the various health professionals know little, or nothing, about how yoga can help.
Even worse, many of them actively (but unknowingly) give inaccurate information about yoga.
Sadly, I’ve seen students either stop yoga on the advice of their health professional, or be actually hurt or set back by them.
Poll on what students get from yoga
The Yoga Alliance is a global organisation of yoga students and teachers. A survey of their members found that the top five reasons for starting yoga are:
- flexibility (61 percent),
- stress relief (56 percent),
- general fitness (49 percent),
- improved overall health (49 percent), and
- physical fitness (44 percent).
In 2017, another large organisation, did a survey of of 2, 610 people who do yoga. They found that 80.4% of them felt that yoga contributed to healing of an injury or pain in their body.
Other surveys show yoga students say they get these benefits:
- physical strength
- pain relief
- avoiding upsets
- compassion & love
- self confidence
- general fitness & health.
