Benefits of pranayama yoga, and video

Pranayama has been proven to improve both mental and physical health. It’s discussed by Dr Anne Swanston in her book The Science Of Yoga.

In Dr Swanston’s video, she says why pranayama yoga delivers these benefits.

She says:

  • nose breathing uses a range of air filters, and also strengthens your immune system
  • breathing low, with your diaphragm, has a relaxing effect
  • slower breathing turns on your parasympathetic (“rest & digest”) nervous system
  • breathing thru your nose releases a chemical called nitric oxide, which relaxes you  
  • diaphragm breathing is more efficient, and makes you feel more relaxed
  • Slowing exhalations soothes your nervous system via the vagus nerve.

As I’ve said: “Pranayama keeps me sane“. I get that some may not agree about my sanity!

I’ve been doing Pranayama for 25 years. It’s given me a dramatic increase in the benefits I get from yoga. Pranayama for anxiety is almost a side benefit of the many other benefits I get. I find breath meditation gives me at least this mix of essential benefits:

The minimum of yoga props you need for pranayama are these:
