My avocado salad is full of Top End produce: roasted sweet potato, black beans, beetroot, corn and fresh herbs, with a simple tahini and lime dressing. It’s vegan, colourful and filling.

Yogi Recipes From Flametree Yoga Studio, Darwin
These are Flametree’s yogi recipes: close to 50 vegan and vegetarian dishes, cooked, photographed and written up by Chris Lalor, a senior Iyengar yoga teacher in Darwin. Many were learnt at the cooking classes on our Bali retreats, then adapted for an Australian kitchen. Others are built around what grows in the Top End: papaya, mango, avocado, pumpkin and sweet potato. They are plant based, low in added sugar, and written so that anyone can follow them.
What is a yogi recipe?
It is food that suits someone who practises yoga or meditation. Plant based, easy to digest, filling enough to carry you through a class, and quick enough to cook on a weeknight. It is climate friendly too, which matters to a lot of our students.
Yoga, meditation and healthy food all complement each other.
In addition, Mr BKS Iyengar summed up well when he said:
Are these recipes vegan?
Nearly all of them are vegan, and the rest are vegetarian. Where a dish can be made either way, the recipe says so. Many are also gluten free, and each recipe says which it is.
Where do the recipes come from?
Three places. Chris learns dishes at the free cooking class on the Flametree Bali retreat. She then cooks them at home in Darwin, usually improving them along the way. And she builds others around whatever is good at the Coolalinga and Darwin markets that week.
Do I have to do yoga to cook them?
Not at all. They are ordinary home cooking, written in plain language. If they lead you to try a class, so much the better.
