Strawberry Banana Smoothie With Tofu: Vegan, No Added Sugar

Strawberry Banana Smoothie With Tofu And Vanilla.

A Creamy Vegan Smoothie With No Added Sugar, And A Smoothie Bowl Option.

Makes At Least 3 Smoothies. Just Blend And Enjoy.

Introduction to strawberry banana smoothie

This strawberry banana smoothie is a punnet of strawberries blended with frozen banana, soft tofu, fresh vanilla and plant based milk, for a creamy vegan smoothie with no added sugar. It makes at least 3 smoothies, and there’s no cooking at all.

The frozen banana is my smoothie secret. It makes the mix creamy and a bit fluffy. The tofu adds some plant protein, so it feels more like a meal in a glass.

I often pour it into a bowl and turn it into a smoothie bowl. Then I add one of my breakfasts, like steel cut oats, black rice pudding or mung beans.

Ingredients for strawberry banana smoothie

Here are the ingredients for this Flametree Yoga Studio smoothie. It makes at least 3 smoothies.

  • A punnet of strawberries
  • Half to 1 whole frozen banana, depending on its size
  • 50 grams of soft tofu, ideally organic
  • 1 vanilla pod, with the seeds scraped out
  • Plant based milk, such as organic soy milk, ideally a gluten free brand

Bananas are one of the sweeter fruits, so don’t overdo the banana. Here in Darwin, a bunch of bananas often ripens faster than I can eat it, so I freeze them. Try to freeze them before they get very ripe, because by then they’re even sweeter.

I use an organic soft tofu, like the one in the picture below. Some tofu has upset my tummy in the past, and I’ve had the bloating to prove it! No one pays me to say this. I’m just saving you the hassle of finding one that suits you.

Frozen bananas, straight from my freezer

How to make strawberry banana smoothie

Use these steps to make this strawberry banana smoothie. Once you have the ingredients, it’s very straightforward.

Step 1: Get everything ready

  • Scrape the seeds out of the vanilla pod.
  • Take the banana out of the freezer.

Step 2: Blend

  • Put the strawberries, frozen banana, soft tofu, vanilla seeds and plant milk in a blender.
  • Blend until you reach the consistency you want.

Step 3: Adjust and serve

  • Add a little more milk to make it thinner, or more of the solids to make it thicker.
  • For a stronger strawberry flavour, add more strawberries.
  • Pour it into glasses, or into a bowl for a smoothie bowl.

Is this strawberry banana smoothie vegan?

Yes. There’s no dairy and no honey, just strawberries, banana, soft tofu, vanilla and plant based milk. It’s gluten free too, as long as your plant milk is. Labels vary, so check yours. I look for a gluten free soy milk.

Can you put tofu in a smoothie?

Yes. Soft tofu blends in smoothly, so you won’t taste it. It makes the smoothie creamy and adds some plant protein, which is why I love it for breakfast.

Soft tofu is the one to use, as it blends much more easily than firm tofu.

What is a smoothie bowl?

A smoothie bowl is a thick smoothie in a bowl, topped with grains, seeds, nuts or fruit, so it becomes more of a meal. You eat it with a spoon rather than drink it.

In the picture below, the smoothie mix of banana, tofu, pineapple and mango sits underneath, and the fruit, seeds and nuts sit on top. I do the same with this strawberry smoothie.

Strawberry banana smoothie: quick questions answered

How many smoothies does this recipe make?

It makes at least 3 smoothies the size of the one in my picture.

Why use a frozen banana in a smoothie?

A frozen banana makes the smoothie creamier and a bit fluffier. It’s also an easy way to save bananas that are ripening faster than you can eat them.

How do I make my smoothie thicker or thinner?

Add a little more plant milk to make it thinner. Add more of the solids, like strawberries, banana or tofu, to make it thicker.

Can I make it taste more of strawberry?

Yes. Add more strawberries, and choose them in season, when they’re especially sweet.
