First, let’s talk about why these ripe, red papaya salad recipes are so often confused with the paw paw salad recipe Darwin options.
The short answer is that many vegetarian, vegan papaya salad recipe/s, or the versions with other additives, use the red coloured papaya fruit.
But, some use the yellow paw paw, and don’t realise it’s actually not papaya.
Plus, many recipes for a paw paw salad Darwin, or from elsewhere, use the yellow version of the fruit. That’s providing they even realise the difference.
But, papaya and paw paw are actually two totally different fruits. See more about this below.
Paw paw is also just more popular, and well known to many. So, paw paw is what the majority of people search for, even when they like the red Darwin NT papaya in the picture below.
Or, they simply don’t know how to tell them apart from each other (at least from the outside).
Your Paw paw salad Darwin ingredients start with an NT Darwin papaya.
The confusion around a paw paw salad Darwin origins
Red papaya is a native of the tropics of Mexico and South America. But the yellow pawpaw, which is not biologically related, is a native of North America.
(In fact, I (Chris) had never never seen a red papaya until, in my early 20’s, I went to Papua New Guinea.)
When papaya’s are uncut, if you look closer, the papaya is oval or pear-shaped.
But a pawpaw is rounder (but not always!).
You can see the longer papaya shape in the picture below.

I am of course talking about a ripe papaya salad. Darwin is of course also famous for a green papaya salad.
So, soon I will also share our green “paw paw” salad Darwin option.
Darwin papaya (red inside). Get them at markets, organic suppliers, or Asian shops.
Easy papaya salad recipe
I and many others prefer the red papaya, because they’re a tad sweeter and maybe more juicy.
But, both the red and yellow fruits are delicious.
So, that’s also why the yellow paw paw salad recipe Darwin options are sometimes confused with the easy, red papaya salad recipes.
It’s also why I’ve co-named this recipe as a simple, paw paw recipes salad option.
See more about the differences in the useful infographic below (from cuisine vault).
Ripe papaya salad recipe can also be done with paw paw
Ingredients for paw paw salad recipe Darwin option
As you can see in the pictures, I’m actually using a red papaya, but many would also see this as a paw paw recipes salad.
All of the Darwin paw paw confusion is probably made worse the popularity of green paw paw salad, where the colours are different again.
Whatever its called, the red papaya version, in my view, is even more delicious than the yellow paw paw version.
Plus, in the recipe below, I made tweaks to make this version work even better as a red, ripe, and vegan papaya salad recipe option.
So, below, get underway with these simple, paw paw salad Darwin ingredients (with either papaya or paw paw).
