The benefits of this breakfast include being:

  • high protein and filling (for a long time)
  • soothing on the stomach and mind
  • quick and easy to make
  • convenient to store in the fridge for 2-3 days
  • yummy!

Darwin breakfast recipe options with steel cut oats & chia

The picture immediately below is not a double up.

If you look closely, the top picture includes dark dots or spot. That’s the chia seeds that are in the top version of this steel cut oats dish.

The version of the dish immediately below is steel cut oats without chia.

Adding chia gives the dish even more protein, and a slightly different taste.

Where to find organic versions of the grains

In the recipe below, I’ve outlined how to include chia seeds, or not.

In the picture, you can see the organic steel cut oats from the breakfast cereal section of your supermarket.

It’s harder to find organic chia, but I’ve found it in either health food shops, or sometimes in the Coles supermarket.

If you check out my recent account of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), I suggest it’s worth searching for organic versions.

Steel cut oats recipes Australia ingredients are as close as Woolworths. But you can also get them in health food shops, often in bulk.

Steel cut oats & chia ingredients

See the pictures for more, but here at the main ingredients:

  • One cup of steel cuts (to suit 2 people for 2-3 days)
  • 2 cups of water
  • A cup of plant based milk… unsweetened
  • A quarter tsp of good quality salt, with no additives (eg Pink Himalayan)
  • One quarter tsp of cinnamon
  • one tablespoon of chia seeds (optional, depending on how much chia you want).

By the way, I’ve been using the Macro steel cuts oats for a long time. Although they are not sold as gluten free, I’ve have never had any issues with around gluten, even though I don’t normally eat anything but gluten free.

Macro does not rate their version as gluten free because it can’t be guarantee in the packing plants.

You can of course buy gluten free steel cut oats at some specialist shops, but they are quite expensive.

Oats in my past

I’d had rolled oats porridge as a kid. But, until I found this Darwin breakfast recipe, I never knew about the steel cut version of oats (or chia).

In this version, the oats grain is simply chopped into small pieces with steel blades. Then, before it’s cooked or soaked it looks like what you see in the picture below.

So, because it’s a hard grain, overnight soaking is important.

I presume it’s also why plenty of people search for things like overnight steel cut oats with chia seeds, or Darwin breakfast recipe overnight.

Once you’ve soaked it, only a small amount of cooking is needed.

My misperceptions about sugar, & learning mindful eating

If you’re unsure about the level of sugar in common fruits, then check out the table I put in a recent email.

For instance, some of the lower sugar fruits are strawberries, avocado, grapefruit, honey dew melon, blackberries, and blue berries.

The bigger issue is keeping tabs on the approximate, total number of grams of sugar in your daily intake.

Personally, even though I (Chris), am thinnish, I find that my weight quickly increases if I overconsume sugar.

The World Health Organisation says to have no more than 25-50 grams a day, but it varies for gender and age. See more from an Australian Government site on sugar.

Last, here is another version of my yogic Klesha (misperception) slides… more applied to my own story of sugar and mindful eating issues.

But, note that the newest research on fructose suggests it’s no worse than sucrose… but that’s bad enough!
