July Yoga Retreat. Bali Activities & Tours. For Our Other Retreats Too.
A FREE half day tour is included for retreat attendees. See places you can visit.
Also check out the many other Bali activities for partners or children.
At Flametree’s Yoga retreat July, or yoga retreat August 2024, as well as Flametree’s other retreats at Christmas, Easter, or whenever, here are some Bali tours, activities, and extras that you can include in your retreat.
In this blog post, we’ve discussed Bali cultural sites, or places of interest or fun, that are in the local Candidasa region of East Bali. These are all within 1-2 hours drive from the retreat resorts, or even closer.
Plus, those attending Flametree retreats get a FREE half day tour included in their retreat package. So, you can use this blog post to help you choose which mix of sites you want to visit.
Flametree tours are done with 4-5 people in each of several taxis from the local village taxi cooperative. (They’re modern vehicles with English-speaking drivers).
As a result, each group can choose the mix of local sites they want to visit, or the whole group can travel together.

Local Bali Culture Tours On Your Free Afternoon
First, for the free afternoon during the retreat, consider making up your own small tour group from those at the retreat.
Flametree will also help and advise on the process, and arrange the taxis to pick up the group.
The tours start right after lunch on the free afternoon day.
You can liaise with others at the retreat via the WhatsApp group we’ll all be part of, or you can chat to them at one of the meals.
The tour is free, and included in your package, except for any small entry fees at the particular sites you visit. (So, take some local rupiah currency when you go).
In addition, you are likely to see things you may want to buy, such as fabrics, or carvings. So also have currency for these.

Flexible tours for a Flametree Yoga retreat July (or whenever)
One option we discuss below is a 4-5 hour trip to visit the White Sand Beach (sometimes called the Virgin Beach, as you’ll see it on Google Maps).
Then, or before, maybe the local Bali Chocolate Factory (pictured below).
The beach has an entry fee to AUD$2.
But of course, if you’re using the touring taxi we suggest, you can adjust the trip itinerary flexibly, as best works for you, or your group.
The number of locations you can visit in an afternoon, is largely dependent on how much time you spend at each location.
Wayan, the lead taxi driver we use, can advise you further.
Plus, depending on how much time you want to take, you can also check out these various locations on Google Maps, such as for Tirta Gangga below.
Then, you can quickly get a sense of a potential itinerary.
Or, just tell Wayan what you want and leave it to him, and or his co-drivers in other vehicles.
Either way, on the free day, leave after lunch (around 1.15pm), and get back in time for dinner (which will be serving between 6.30-7pm).
Delicious, locally made chocolate!
Option One: 5 hour Bali culture trip
For the 5 hour trip, do it from 1.15-6.15pm (for at total of AUD$50 split among you). Some suggested options to go to are these.
-
Tirta Gangga (Water Palace).
- Here are some notes on the Palace, from its Wikipedia summary.
- Tirta Gangga is a former royal palace in eastern Bali, Indonesia. See the picture below. It’s also marked on the map further down this page, to the north of Candidasa (which is two thirds of the way up the east coast of Bali).
- It’s named after the sacred river Ganges in Hinduism, it is noted for the Karangasem royal water palace, bathing pools and its Patirthan temple.
- The one hectare complex was built in 1946 by the late King of Karangsem, I Gusti Bagus Jelantik, who was also responsible for the construction of Taman Ujung (see below).
- Tirta Gangga is based on the beliefs in Balinese Hinduism, where river Ganges and its waters are considered sacred.
- Here are some notes on the Palace, from its Wikipedia summary.
-
Taman Ujung (Flothing palace)
-
- So-called Flothing Palace is another fascinating village you can easily include in a half day tour.
- Plus, see more at Wikipedia on this palace.
- Ujung Water Palace is a former palace in Karangasem Regency, Bali.
- This palace also known as Ujung Park or Sukasada Park. It is also close to Flametree’s July, August, or other retreats.
- The palace has three large pools. In the middle of the pool, there is the main building named Gili Bale, connected to the edge of the pool by bridge.
-
Tenganan (traditional Balinese village)
- In some of the more isolated parts of Bali, there are very traditional villages. Life and culture continues there in the same manner as for at least many centuries. For instance, some are near Lake Batur, which we discuss in a post on other tours. This village also sells excellent fabrics that they weave.
-
- But, Tenganan traditional village can be included in an easy taxi tour from the Flametree Yoga August retreat (or whenever). Wikipedia, has about this village…, and here are a few of its key points.
- Tenganan Pegringsingan or Pageringsingan is a village in East Bali.
- Among other things, it is known for the gringsing or geringsing, double ikat textiles that are woven in only 3 places in the world.
- It is also known for its gamelan selunding or Gambelan selonding music played on iron metallophones.
- Tenganan follows its unique Bali Aga culture that still holds to the original traditions, ceremonies, and rules of ancient Balinese culture, including its unique village layout and architecture.
- But, Tenganan traditional village can be included in an easy taxi tour from the Flametree Yoga August retreat (or whenever). Wikipedia, has about this village…, and here are a few of its key points.
Option 2: Beach & chocolate factory trip: 4 or 5 hours
The second option is only go to the White Sands Beach (or so-called Virgin Beach), where you can swim and sunbathe on the beach.
Or, you can quickly visit, and then continue to the chocolate factory (pictured above), or some mix of the other locations we’ve mentioned above.
Your taxi driver will be flexible. But obviously, it’s best to work out a rough agenda before you leave.
See a YouTube video of the White Sand Beach here.
The round trip, over four hours, is around AUD$37 (or 375,000 Indonesian rupiah).

History & culture of the Klung Klung East Bali Kingdom
On the way to the Flametree Yoga retreat at Pondok Pisang, you’ll will go through the town of Klung Klung.
For many centuries, it was the centre of the Balinese royal empire in Eastern Bali. Plus, these royal families led Balinese warriors that fiercely defended their region from outside colonial, or other, conquest.
So, it is an extremely important historical location, with interesting existing cultural sites and remnants. Nowadays, it’s also a busy commercial region, with a large daily market.
Here’s more Wikipedia about nearby Klung Klung palace, and the conquest of Bali by the Dutch, and East India Company.
- The Klungkung Palace, officially Puri Agung Semarapura, is a historical building complex situated in Semarapura, the capital of the Klungkung Regency.
- The palace (puri) was erected at the end of the 17th century, but largely destroyed during the Dutch colonial conquest in 1908.
- The Babad Dalem, a chronicle of the kingdom of Klungkung, records its kings’ dynasty by the name of Kapaisan, a genealogy that is traced back to even earlier regimes (1293-16th century).
The Klung Klung region and palace could be something you visit if you arrive early at the Flametree Yoga retreat, or stay later.
But, it’s also possible to see it on the free half day, if that is your main agenda.

Other options and activities for you, partners or children
Below is a list of other options and activities in the East Bali region. (You’ll also find the locations on Google maps).
If you arrive early, or stay after the retreat, they’re good options.
If you bring a partner (to stay in your Sea Breeze room for free), or bring children (via our families option), then these are also good options for them. (See more below about partners).
So, the other activities include these.
- Enjoying the many facilities and offerings of the Sea Breeze or Amarta resorts, including the swimming pool in the picture further down this page. (There’s also ocean swimming, depending a little on tides).
- Golf day trips to some outstanding Bali golf courses, on the coast or in the mountains.
- Massages with the on-site masseurs at the Pondok Pisang resort. (Your first massage is included in your package FREE).
- Diving at some wonderful spots along the local coast, like Padang Bai (in the picture below). Plus at some World War Two wrecks (see below).
- Snorkelling locally, or over soft coral sites like the shipwreck of the torpedoed USS Liberty.
- A day trip to wonderful swimming beaches (especially for children), such as the so-called Virgin Beach (or White Sand beach shown in the first picture on this page).
- Several local gyms in Candidasa, within walking distance
- Fishing, including from outrigger fishing boats hired from the main beaches in the Amed area, to the north. (See top right of map below).
- Boat trips along the coast in the wonderful outrigger boats you see pictured below.
- Spa treatments at the Amarta resort.
Padang Bai: a centre for diving, & ferries to islands
Even more activities
Here’s a continuation of the above list of activities, with most in the local Candidasa region of East Bali.
- Getting clothes made with local tailors. (Ask us, or local taxi driver Wayan, for our recommendations).
- Watching seasonal ceremonies (ask us, or taxi driver Wayan, for more details).
- On the free half day, partners can also come to the Balinese cooking class already included in your package (or go with you on whatever tour you may do).
- Before or after the retreat, you can also go further afield, so as to include the major surf beaches, mountains such as Mt Batur (volcano), and its hot springs, longer tours, or extensive shopping (locally or beyond). This mountain, and it’s blue lake, is on the top centre of the map below.
- Visiting the two so-called Gates, where you can view Mt Agung and the local area.
- Walk through scenic rice paddies in the local area.
- Take local language classes with an experienced teacher we recommend.
- Visiting offshore islands, such as Lombok, or even closer ones (as on the map below), via ferry from Padang Bai (above). If you’re considering Lombok, we can recommend you to an Australian we know well, who runs a hotel and restaurant there.
Obviously, some of these trips involve using a taxi, or your own hire car.
Although there is local car hire, we suggest using a taxi. (We’ve driven in Bali, and local driving customs can be stressful for Westerners!)
Taxi drivers like Wayan are low cost by Australian standards. Plus, he’s honest, reliable, safe, and knows the local Bali well. He will also give you an accurate price in advance of your trip.
A partner could also do some of these things while you are focussed on yogic activities in the retreat schedule.
