What to expect in your free beginner yoga class

Chair forward bend, an easy pose from Flametree free beginner yoga classes Darwin

A chair makes a forward bend easy for a beginner. Props like this are part of every Flametree beginner class, and the same pose is used in the Yoga For Backs class.

Iyengar yoga, taught step by step

Flametree teaches Iyengar yoga, a style known for clear instructions and the use of props. In a beginner class, the teacher demonstrates each pose, explains where to place your feet and hands, and then helps each student. Blocks, belts, blankets and chairs let a stiff or unfit body do the poses safely, so you do not need to be flexible to start.

Classes run for about an hour. They usually include standing poses, some gentle forward bends and twists, and finish with a few minutes of relaxation lying down. Tell your teacher about any injuries or health conditions before class, so they can adapt the poses for you.

Tree pose builds leg strength, balance and focus. Here it is shown by senior Iyengar teacher Chris Lalor; in class, beginners can use the wall for support.

Who the free class suits

  • People who have never done yoga, at any age, size or fitness level.
  • People coming back to yoga after a break.
  • People with stiff backs, necks or hips; see also Yoga For Backs, Wednesday 7.15pm at Woolner.
  • Older people; see yoga for seniors in Darwin.
  • Men who think they are too stiff for yoga; see yoga for stiff guys.

What students say they get from yoga

Many students find regular classes help them feel stronger, more flexible, better balanced and calmer. Holding poses works the muscles, and the slow, attentive breathing and relaxation at the end of class help many people unwind. In the yoga tradition, practice also steadies the mind. Results vary from person to person, and yoga supports, but does not replace, care from your doctor.
