All beginner classes are very doable, introductory yoga, with sufficient challenge to be useful, interesting, and dynamic.

In particular, Tuesday’s Male Yoga class is also designed to be uplifting, energising, and de-stressing. 

As a result, the Darwin men in the class, will also feel calmer, or more “chilled out”.

Yes, yoga was first developed by males, for males. Now, nearly a third of classes are men. Yoga gives both men & women similar, powerful, physical & mental benefits. It obviously works differently, but very effectively, for the health of their unique reproductive systems.

From their 40s, men can get these symptoms from declining testosterone.

Male yoga, together with other wellness practices, can reduce or significantly prevent these andropause symptoms of declining testosterone. Yoga for the inflexible male, or any other situation you’re concerned about, will also work for your reproductive system health and hormones.

So, these men are already using yoga to manage the challenging male testosterone and health issues that I’ll say more about below.

(I’m going to speak very directly about them, because I think not enough is known about them).

Meanwhile, some women have also told me that they wish men had less testosterone. As you probably know, it’s associated with aggression, road rage, and other undesirable behaviour.

But, I think testosterone has had a bad rap. In fact, it’s critically necessary for both men and women.

Instead, bad behaviour can be helped enormously by yogic practices that lead to calmer mind states.

I’ve talked about how that happens in a separate presentation on the so-called sattvic mind, and using yoga to access the “rest and relax” part of the nervous system.

The decline in testosterone in men has a wide range of impacts. But the impact can be reduced dramatically by yoga and other wellness focussed living. If you just want to get on with a free first yoga class at Flametree, and you’re wondering about what to wear to yoga male classes, the quick answer is any shorts and T-shirt.

Testosterone and intimacy

As you can see in the graph above, Testosterone declines for men, starting in the early 30s.

As a result, from their 40s, men can have some mix of the so-called Andropause symptoms shown in the diagram above.

So, it becomes especially important to have natural, mind-body ways to help deal with the impact. That’s where male yoga for the reproductive system, and more, can help enormously.

From the symptoms in the first diagram, and as you’ll see when you read on, women will also recognise health issues for men that also heavily impact women’s lives, including their intimate lives.

So, for a wide range of reasons, women also have a high self-interest in encouraging men to get the mind body solutions that flow from even the very doable male yoga for the inflexible male, or whoever, that Flametree teaches.

Menopause in women, due to decline of estrogen, shares a lot of the symptoms that are also experienced by males from testosterone decline. So, with the knowledge or experience that women have of menopause, including pre and post, can give them a better understanding of what their male partners, relatives, or friends experience.

Most importantly, Flametree’s Male Yoga class is focussed on working with the strengths of men’s bodies, such as strong upper bodies.

Poor posture example that male yoga can very definitely prevent and solve.

The painful posture of many runners

For example, when I’m out and about, I often observe regular jogger. Their calf muscles are often very tight, due to not sufficiently straightening the legs.

As a result, they often have a back bent in ways that are painful, or will be painful in future.

The contorted posture also collapses the chest to a fraction of its ideal capacity, and rounds the shoulders.

Such people are of course just trying to do everything right.

Sadly, the poor posture, and overly tight muscles, do not lead to a good posture, and lead to unnecessary, ongoing pain.

It can also depress a joggers’ state of mind.

For example, you probably already know that when you stand upright, in the correct manner, you feel more confident and positive about yourself and the world.

That’s part of what is already happening each week for the men walking out of Flametree classes each day who immediately feel uplifted and energised. They are getting a great mix of the yoga benefits shown in the diagram below.

Testosterone decline at andropause, and earlier

Women know all about the changes in estrogen and progesterone hormones at menopause.

But andropause in men is less well known.

A major medical source describes the symptoms of male andropause like this.

“Some men develop depression, loss of sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and other physical and emotional symptoms when they reach their late 40s to early 50s. Other symptoms common in men this age are mood swings and irritability, loss of muscle mass, reduced ability to exercise, fat redistribution (such as developing a large belly or “man boobs”), a general lack of enthusiasm or energy, difficulty sleeping, or increased tiredness, poor concentration and short-term memory”.

Most men will recognise some mix of these symptoms. The earlier diagrams about them are maybe an understatement.

Plus, the well-known grumpy, older men mind state, is backed by research!

As seen above, testosterone declines steadily from the early 30s.

Plus, the side effects of testosterone replacement pills would definitely make you think twice about that suggestion.

But, at the Male Yoga class, week by week, men will be doing a yoga pose sequence that I (Senior Teacher and Flametree Owner, Chris Lalor), have specially designed to help deal with all the issues I’ve outlined.

By the way, major studies also show men’s testosterone decline has even increased in the last several decades.

In other words, the situation is getting worse, and nobody yet knows why. But, it’s thought that its due to increased stress levels.

Of course, many men also experience weight gain, well before andropause sets in.

But, Dr McCall, a medical doctor and yoga therapist, explains how Flametree’s type of yoga also helps weight loss.
