Pelvic floors can be too tight, or too loose

You probably remember the story of Goldilocks. She searched for a porridge that was not too hot, not too cold, but just right.

When it comes to pelvic floors, I always think of that Goldilocks story.

With our pelvic floors, it’s critical that they be not too loose, not to tight, but just right!

Getting the right pelvic floor, is one of the many unique contributions that yoga can make to your life and wellness.

It’s something that you probably won’t get from the infamous Kegels exercises, even if you could bring yourself to do enough of them, and do them the right way.

You certainly won’t get the right tightness from conventional exercise, or no exercise.

In turn, it’s also what I love about yoga.

Yogic activities let you powerfully manage so many women’s wellness and intimacy issues, and get so many benefits, as you participate in what can be enjoyable and mind expanding recreational activities.

Flametree’s updated non-beginner class for women, at 5.30pm Wednesdays is called “Women’s Wellness Yoga”.

Risks & issues of female life stages.

In this new weekly Women’s Wellness class, I’m teaching how to use yoga so that women can effectively and positively approach and manage each of the stages show in the diagram below.

Obviously, the diagram below is illustrating risks & issues, not necessarily realities.

But, they’re important matters to take into account. Even better, quality yoga can assist you with a very large number of preventative steps, or processes to manage and reduce impacts.

Women’s Wellness yoga is a non-beginner class. But, those who’ve been at beginner level for 6 months are welcome (or if you ask me, Christine).

Women’s wellness yoga practice and theory

Of course, the central focus of Women’s Wellness is on giving you yoga poses, and sequences of poses, that address the issues and matters I’ve outlined further in the class syllabus.

Plus, you’ll see more in a separate post about what is Women’s wellness.

However, if you’ve already been to my classes, you’ll know that bit by bit, at appropriate times, I (Chris), will give you the theory behind what we’re doing and why.

So over time, you’ll get a whole Darwin wellness course in Women’s Wellness yoga; week by week.

In addition, class by class, you’ll also be able to use the approaches, poses and sequences to inform the rest of your yoga classes. (Remember, the more you do, the better it works).

As you know, as Westerners, we’re educated to look for “why” to do whatever.

In turn, that helps us have more motivation to do it.

In addition, having the why and the how, let’s us efficiently do everything the right way… so as to maximise the benefits that yoga for women’s wellness can deliver.

Appropriate modifications at period time helps manage any pain, and often reduces menstruation issues hugely. 

Syllabus: Approach & issues in Darwin Wellness Yoga

  1. Strengthening your pelvic floor (in ways that avoid an overly tight pelvic floor).
  2. Toning your abdominals; for internal and external purposes.
  3. Weight bearing for bones, and strengthening muscles (via do-able standing poses).
  4. Hormonal health, because hormones govern everything, including mood, energy balance, & more .
  5. How to practise yoga so as to nourish your glands, especially in your throat, thyroid, adrenals, and beyond.
  6. Managing how estrogen is produced in your body, as you move towards and through perimenopause, menopause, and post menopause.
  7. Handling anxiety and stress due to the 2 or more jobs women have, such as running the home, and your job.
  8. How you look after your body and mind so as to also have a sustaining and wonderful intimate life.
  9. Using yogic practices so women give themselves enough “me time”.
  10. How to have a significant restorative yoga practice, and also do muscle strengthening.
  11. Maximising breast health, such as working to bring in fresh blood to the chest areas.

  • Digestive health and all the typical issues, including IBS, constipation, systemic inflammation, bloating, and much more.
  • What it means to have spirituality, in whatever way you choose to define it.
  • For me, and I think for many women, spirituality includes feeling connected and complete, so as to lead to reflection, and generate inner calm and happiness.
  • A chance for you and others in the class to stop, and be with themselves. It’s about nourishment beyond physical health, including being able to be with yourself.
  • As you do and experience all this, doing it so as to avoid guilt… in terms of what your partner, boss, staff, or children may think you should do, or what you think you should be doing for them!
  • The perennial issue of incontinence!
  • Building a better sense of self, and being happy. Happiness is something that you can learn to create, have, and manage.
  • Women’s back issues, including postural matters. Plus, being aware of when you’re unconsciously holding tension in your abdomen.
  • Reducing stiff hips for all ages.
  • Being more aware of misperceptions we all have. (Using the so-called “avidya” approach of all good quality yoga.)
  • Wholistic and natural ways to overcome or manage menstruation.
  • Perimenopause and menopause, including a range of ways to deal with hot flushing.
  • Prolapsed uterus issues.
  • The role of balancing poses for weight management, and strengthening your body, including so as to reduce or avoid falls and injuries.

By the way, the class is also good if you want to get pregnant in due course, or are already. In particular, it will make you stronger, calmer, less anxious, and more equipped with breathing skills.
