5 Doable Ways To Motivate Yourself

AKA Getting Off The Couch!
Do you ever want to do yoga, but yet find yourself not actually doing it?
You’re not lazy or hopeless – you’re human!
We all face that mental hurdle when it comes to getting to class, especially if we’re restarting after a break or just feeling blah.
The good news? You can gently outsmart your inner couch potato.
Science backed yoga motivations
Here are five science-backed motivational tricks (drawn from research by biomechanist Katy Bowman and psychologist Dr. Diana Hill) to help you start, restart, or continue your yoga journey – no willpower wars needed.
- Urge Surfing: When an urge to skip class or plop on the couch hits, try “surfing” it. Notice the craving (to stay home, eat ice cream, etc.) as a wave rising and falling. Don’t act on it; just ride it out. Urges usually peak within minutes and then fade away. By surfing that wave, you stay in control. Next thing you know, the wave passes – and you’re putting on your yoga gear.
- The “So What?” Trick: Ever catch yourself thinking, “I’m too tired/stiff/old to go to yoga”? Answer back with “So what?” Basically, give yourself permission to be tired or stiff and go anyway. One tip from psychologists is literally telling yourself: “So what if I’m stiff? I can go to yoga and be stiff.” This lighthearted mental shrug disconnects your feeling from your action. You’ll realize you don’t have to wait for perfect conditions – you can show up as you are, and feel better by the end of class.
- Reframe Effort as Nourishment: We often label exercise as “hard work” that drains us. Try reframing it: yoga class is nourishing time for you, not another item on your to-do list. Research suggests that shifting your mindset from “energy spending” to “energy giving” makes a big difference. Think of yoga as feeding your body and soul (like a healthy meal) rather than burning calories or punishing yourself. This change in perspective turns going to class into an act of self-care. You’re not depleting energy – you’re investing it in yourself.
- Values-Based Motivation: Ask yourself why you want to practice yoga. Is it to stay mobile and strong as you age? To relieve stress so you can be more present with family? To feel happier and healthier overall? Whatever your personal values are – connect your practice to them. Experts find that when your motivation comes from deeply held values (like “I want to be active so I can play with my grandchildren”). Such approaches are far more resilient than more superficial goals. So when the alarm goes off for that morning class, remember your “why.” It will power you through the hesitation.
- Build Psychological Flexibility: Life is unpredictable – some days you’re energised, other days you’re cranky or sluggish. Psychological flexibility is the skill of doing what matters even when your mood or circumstances aren’t ideal. In practice, it means you might feel lazy, anxious, or out of shape, but you go to class anyway because you know it aligns with your values (see #4). You don’t wait to “feel perfect.” This skill grows with practice: every time you show up despite the mental chatter, you strengthen that mental muscle. Over time, it gets easier to roll out your mat because you trust that you can handle whatever thoughts or feelings arise. As one yoga student, Vernon, put it after initially dragging his feet: “After my first class… everything changed. I was hooked”. He learned that just getting started was the hardest part – and once he did, the rewards he immediately felt kept him coming back.

Remember, motivation isn’t about magically erasing your hesitation – it’s about moving forward with it.
