Iyengar yoga is the style developed by Mr BKS Iyengar. In the 20th century he did more than anyone to set down traditional Indian yoga, through his books and his teaching, and he pioneered the use of props. It’s the style we teach at Flametree. This post sits beside our full headaches and migraine guide and the deeper page on migraine relief: what Geeta Iyengar advised, both part of our encyclopaedia of yoga for health conditions.

Rest that needs only a chair

Resting with the legs on a chair seat. Quiet lying poses like this need only a chair and a blanket, so they work as well in a Townsville lounge room as in the studio.

Why learn migraine relief at home?

In short: a migraine starts where you are, and that is usually at home.

Geeta S Iyengar, Mr Iyengar’s daughter and one of the great teachers of his method, gave simple advice for a migraine attack: bend forward and rest the forehead on a bench, chair or bolster, at the height where the neck relaxes. Too low, she said, and the headache gets worse. Our migraine relief page sets out her advice in full.

Finding that height is personal. It depends on your legs, your back and the chair you own. In a studio you learn it on the studio’s props. Online, you learn it on your own furniture, with the teacher checking through the camera. When the next migraine comes, you already know which chair, how many blankets and which cushion.

A basic home kit for this work:

  • a sturdy chair without arms
  • two or three firm, folded blankets
  • a firm cushion or bolster
  • a crepe bandage for a head wrap

Does home yoga practice help migraine?

In short: yes. In a trial, daily home practice added to usual care gave a bigger fall in migraines.

In an Indian trial, 61 people with migraine were taught a yoga routine and asked to practise it daily at home for three months, with a weekly phone call to keep them on track. According to PubMed, the group that added yoga to standard treatment had a bigger fall in how often headaches came and how severe they were than the group on standard treatment alone. Mehta and colleagues, 2021, Journal of Neurosciences in Rural Practice. Read the study (PMID 33531761).

That is close to what a live online class gives you: practice at home, with regular contact from a teacher. Dr Timothy McCall, an American medical doctor and yoga therapist who studied with Mr BKS Iyengar, author of Yoga as Medicine, tells of an Iyengar-trained teacher, Rodney Yee, whose student had migraines lasting up to three days. He moved her from vigorous classes to mostly supported, restful poses with a head wrap. Dr McCall reports that her migraines fell from three or four a month to one or two.

Dr Krishna Raman, a medical doctor in Chennai who trained in yoga under Mr BKS Iyengar and has used yoga in his medical practice for decades, writes in Yoga and Medical Science: FAQ that forward bends help most people with migraine (question 222). Supported upside-down poses come later, learnt with a teacher between attacks.

Two chairs and a bolster

Is north Queensland’s heat a factor too?

In short: probably, as it is in Darwin. Townsville and Cairns share the tropical heat, humidity and storm season of the Top End, and studies link hot days and dehydration with more headaches. Our heat headache post for Darwin covers what the research says and what to do on a hot day. For the triggers in general, see our migraine triggers post.

How to start

Book a beginner class, tell your teacher you get migraines, and have your chair and blankets nearby. The teacher will adapt the poses for you, and show you the forehead rest when it suits.
