Headache In Brisbane Or The Gold Coast? Fitting Yoga Into A South-East Queensland Work Day

Eight hours at a screen in a Brisbane office, an hour on the M1 to the Gold Coast, and a headache that turns up every afternoon at about three. Sound familiar? You’re far from alone, and it’s costing more than your afternoon.

Headache in Brisbane or the Gold Coast: the short answer

For many South-East Queensland workers, the headache in Brisbane offices starts with the desk day: tired eyes, a forward head and tight shoulders, with stress on top. Yoga works on all of those, and the trials show fewer and milder migraines when people add regular classes to their usual care. The hard part is fitting a class into the work day. Flametree’s live online Iyengar yoga classes run from Darwin, 30 minutes behind Queensland time all year, so there are evening and weekend classes you can join from home in Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan or the Gold Coast without another commute.

Here is the article in short form:

A sudden, very severe headache, the worst you have ever had. A headache with weakness, numbness, confusion or trouble speaking. A headache with a stiff neck and fever, or after a knock to the head. Iyengar yoga is the style developed by Mr BKS Iyengar. In the 20th century he did more than anyone to set down traditional Indian yoga, through his books and his teaching, and he pioneered the use of props. It’s the style we teach at Flametree. This post sits beside our full headaches and migraine guide and the deeper page on migraine relief: what Geeta Iyengar advised, both part of our encyclopaedia of yoga for health conditions.

How much do headaches cost working Australians?

In short: a lot. Most people with migraine are of working age.

A 2018 report by Deloitte Access Economics, prepared for the drug company Novartis, estimated that 4.9 million Australians live with migraine. It put the total cost at $35.7 billion a year, of which $16.3 billion was lost productivity, and found that 86% of people with migraine are of working age. Read the report summary.

Those numbers are made of ordinary afternoons: the meeting you sit through with one eye shut, the day you go home at lunchtime, the weekend lost to recovering.

Why does the desk day bring on a headache?

In short: tired eyes, a jammed neck and stress, all at once.

In a study of 1,207 people with migraine, 38.4% named neck pain as a trigger and 38.1% named lights. Stress topped the list at 79.7%. Kelman, 2007, Cephalalgia. Read the study (PMID 17403039). Our migraine triggers post has the full list.

Screens, office lights and a forward head are the normal working day for many people in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast. Add a deadline, and the three biggest desk triggers arrive together.

What is an eye strain headache, and what did Mr Iyengar advise?

In short: pain around the eyes and temples, and his answer was to rest the eyes and cool the head.

In Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health, Mr BKS Iyengar’s first headache entry is “headache and eye strain” (p. 351). He describes sharp pain around the eyes and temples that builds quickly. His approach is built on forward bends with the head supported and other calming poses, with gentle breathing.

His daughter Geeta S Iyengar adds a point every desk worker should hear. In Yoga: A Gem for Women she warns against caving in the chest to reach the head down in a forward bend, because it stiffens the neck and brings on headaches. The same is true at a desk: a caved chest pushes the head forward and loads the neck.

Dr Krishna Raman, a medical doctor in Chennai who trained in yoga under Mr BKS Iyengar and has used yoga in his medical practice for decades, ties headaches and neck pain to a tight head and neck and a restrained breath. His advice, in Yoga and Medical Science: FAQ (questions 127 and 128), is to keep the muscles across the tops of the shoulders soft.

Rest for screen-tired eyes

What can you do at your desk for a neck headache?

In short: three small moves, a few times a day.

  1. Lift and widen the chest. Stand up, roll the shoulders back and down, and let the breastbone rise. The head comes back over the body by itself.
  2. Look into the distance. Turn away from the screen, find the furthest thing you can see through a window, and let the eyes go soft and heavy.
  3. Unclench. Part the back teeth, let the tongue rest, and drop the tops of the shoulders on a slow out-breath.

If a neck headache is already building, the stronger answer is the head-supported forward bend that Geeta Iyengar taught for migraine: forehead on a support, at a height where the neck lets go. Our migraine relief page explains how, and our tension headache guide goes deeper on the neck and jaw.

Does Iyengar yoga help stress and headaches?

In short: in one study, yes, with marked headache relief.

In a German study, 24 women who felt emotionally distressed either took two 90-minute Iyengar yoga classes a week for three months or waited their turn. According to PubMed, the yoga group had clearly less stress, anxiety, fatigue and low mood, and better well-being. Those who had headaches or back pain reported marked pain relief, and the stress hormone cortisol fell after a class. Michalsen and colleagues, 2005, Medical Science Monitor. Read the study (PMID 16319785).

That study tested Iyengar yoga specifically: twice a week, for three months. Twice a week is the sort of habit a working person can keep, if the class times fit. Our headaches and migraine guide lists the larger migraine trials.
