Why do people search for online yoga in their own city?
It is a fair question, because online yoga is not tied to a city. A class on a screen works the same whether you are in Carlton, Coogee, West End or Fremantle.
So why do so many people type “online yoga Melbourne” or “online yoga Sydney”?
When we ask, the answer is almost always one of these.
They want an Australian teacher. Most of the big yoga apps are American. The voice, the pace and the assumptions are all slightly off. People want someone who sounds like them.
They want Australian hours. A live class that runs at 3am your time is no use. Searching by city is a rough way of asking “will this class be on when I am awake”.
They want a real studio, not an app. A studio has teachers with names, training and accountability. An app has a video library.
Some want a studio in their own suburb. That is a different thing, and we say so plainly below.
If you are in the first three groups, read on. This is exactly that.
What this is, in one paragraph
Flametree is a yoga studio in Darwin, Northern Territory. Our classes run live over Zoom at the same time as they run in the room, so you are in a real class with a real teacher who can see you and talk to you.
The teaching is Iyengar yoga, which is the style built around getting the shape right and adapting it to your body. Classes are taught or supervised by certified senior teachers.
Nobody in the room can see you. The teacher can.
What this is not
This is not a studio in your suburb. If what you want is to walk five minutes and lie on a floor with other people in the room, you want a local studio, and you should get one.
We are also not the cheapest thing on the internet. There are free videos everywhere, and we have four free full length ones on this site. What a video cannot do is see you.
If you are weighing up live classes against videos against free apps, we wrote a plain guide to that: where to learn yoga online.
Class times in your city
Our classes run on Darwin time, which is GMT plus nine and a half hours all year. The Northern Territory does not use daylight saving, so our clock never moves. Yours might.
Here is how a Darwin class time lands where you are.
| Your city | Most of the year | During daylight saving |
| Brisbane | 30 minutes ahead of Darwin | No daylight saving, so always 30 minutes ahead |
| Sydney | 30 minutes ahead of Darwin | 1 hour 30 minutes ahead |
| Melbourne | 30 minutes ahead of Darwin | 1 hour 30 minutes ahead |
| Adelaide | Same time as Darwin | 1 hour ahead |
| Perth | 1 hour 30 minutes behind Darwin | No daylight saving, so always 1 hour 30 minutes behind |
| Hobart | 30 minutes ahead of Darwin | 1 hour 30 minutes ahead |
You do not have to work this out yourself. Every timetable page on this site shows the class times converted into your own local time, in a box just below the timetable grid. It uses the clock on your own phone or computer, so it is already right.
Online yoga Melbourne
Melbourne is half an hour ahead of us for most of the year, and an hour and a half ahead over summer when your clocks go forward.
In practice that means our early morning Darwin classes land as a comfortable Melbourne morning, and our evening classes land in your late evening.
If you are in Melbourne and want a live class with an Australian teacher who can see what you are doing, this works well. Check the timetable and look at the converted times underneath it.
Online yoga Sydney
Sydney sits on the same clock as Melbourne, so the same applies. Half an hour ahead of Darwin most of the year, an hour and a half ahead during daylight saving.
Sydney has no shortage of studios. What people tell us they come to us for is the teaching style and the fact that they can do it from home at a set time with a real teacher watching, rather than pressing play on a video.
Online yoga Brisbane
Brisbane is the easiest of the lot, because Queensland does not use daylight saving either. You are simply half an hour ahead of us, all year round, with no seasonal shuffle to remember.
A 6.30am class here is 7am for you, every week, forever.
Online yoga Perth
Perth is an hour and a half behind Darwin, and stays there all year.
That cuts both ways. Our morning classes are early for you. Our late afternoon and evening classes land at a very civilised Perth afternoon.
If you are in Perth, we also have a page on the simple set up for online yoga classes that walks through the whole thing step by step.
Online yoga Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra and everywhere else
Same answer. The class does not care where you are. Adelaide shares our half hour offset, so for a good part of the year Adelaide is on exactly the same clock as Darwin.
We have students in capital cities, in regional towns, on stations, and overseas.
Online yoga in other cities and regions
Each of these pages answers the same question for one place: how a live online class works from where you are, and what the class times mean on your clock.

If you also like the idea of breath meditation, the pranayama class with Chris Lalor runs on Tuesday and Thursday from 6.30 to 7.30am Darwin time, live online and at Woolner.
What it costs
Every price below says how long it runs and whether it covers studio classes as well as online ones, because that is where people usually get confused.
| Pass | Price | How long | Covers |
| Beginner deal: 2 free classes plus 10 at half price | $59.50 | 10 classes, plus 2 free | Online or studio |
| Beginner weekly online pass, first week free | $10.95 a week | Weekly | Online classes only |
| One month unlimited online, non-beginners | $29 | 30 days | Online classes only |
| Ten pass, online beginner yoga | $89 | 10 classes | Online classes only |
| One casual online class, non-beginner | $17.50 | 1 class | Online classes only |
The full list of passes has the concession rates, the household passes and the packages that include recorded videos.
Why is the online-only price so low?
Because once a class is already running in the studio, adding a few more people online costs us almost nothing. No extra floor space, no extra teacher.
We would rather you tried a real live class with a senior teacher for about a dollar a day and made up your own mind, than never got past a free video.
What you need at home
A firm floor, enough room to lie down with your arms out, a device with a camera, and the free Zoom app.
A mat helps. Most other props can be improvised from cushions, blankets, belts and chairs you already have, and we have a page on improvising yoga props.
Point the camera so the teacher can see your whole body. That is the part that makes a live class worth more than a video.
How to join, in plain words
Coming to a class online? Click the class time you want, and we email you the link to join it. The link arrives straight away, and a reminder comes about half an hour before the class starts.
Ever in Darwin? Just come along to the studio. There is nothing to fill in and nothing to arrange.

Common questions
Can I do online yoga in Melbourne with an Australian studio?
Yes. Our live classes are open to anyone in Australia. We are a Darwin studio, our teachers are Australian, and the class times are shown converted into Melbourne time below every timetable on this site.
Are there live online yoga classes for Sydney people?
Yes, and live is the important word. These are real classes happening at a set time, not recordings. The teacher can see you and adjust what you are doing, which a video cannot.
What time do the classes run for Brisbane?
Brisbane is 30 minutes ahead of Darwin all year, because neither of us uses daylight saving. So a 6.30am Darwin class is 7am in Brisbane, every week.
Is online yoga any good for people in Perth?
It works well, with one thing to know. Perth is an hour and a half behind Darwin, so our morning classes are early for you and our afternoon and evening classes land at a good Perth hour. Pick from the afternoon end of the timetable.
Do I need to be in the Northern Territory to join?
No. Only the in-studio classes are in Darwin. The online classes are open to anyone, anywhere.
Is this a recording or a real class?
A real class, live, at a set time. We also have recorded videos, but the live classes are the thing that makes people improve, because someone is watching.
Do I have to turn my camera on?
No, and some people on slow connections leave it off. But you get much more from the class when the teacher can see you, and it is safer, because the teacher can tell you when something is heading towards an injury.
I am a complete beginner. Is that a problem?
No. Many of our students had never done a yoga class of any kind before their first online one. Choose a Beginner class, and tell the teacher it is your first.
Do I need to be flexible first?
No. Flexibility is what yoga gives you, not what you bring to it. A good beginner class assumes you cannot touch your toes and hands you a chair or a block.
What if I have a sore back, neck or hip?
Tell the teacher before your first class. We run specific classes for backs, necks and shoulders, plus gentle and restorative options, and a live teacher can give you a version of each pose that suits you.
How do I get the link to join?
Click the class time you want and we email it to you. There is nothing else to do.
