Uneven Shoulders: Why One Shoulder Sits Higher, And What Evens It Out

Uneven shoulders: the short answer

Uneven shoulders, where one shoulder sits higher than the other, are very common. Most of us are a little lopsided, because the body does the same job on one side, over and over: carrying the bag, using the mouse, standing on one leg. Iyengar yoga works on both sides equally, from the feet up, so the body learns to share the load.

You do not need a perfect body to start. Most people only notice one shoulder higher than the other when someone points it out, or when they see a photo.

  • It is common: almost everyone stands, sits and carries more on one side.
  • The cause: one-sided habits repeated for years, not one big event.
  • The whole body: the shoulders sit on the ribs, which sit on the hips and feet.
  • The yoga way: even standing, even sitting and equal work on both sides.
  • The arms matter: strong, open arm and chest work evens out the shoulders.
  • Learn it in class: a teacher can see what you cannot, in the studio or LIVE online.
  • New students: 12 classes for $59.50 in Darwin or LIVE online.

Standing evenly in Mountain Pose, the starting point for working on uneven shoulders

Mountain Pose. Weight on both feet, chest lifted, shoulders level. This is where evening out begins.

Why is one shoulder higher than the other?

Look at the knuckles of your index finger. They sit a little tilted, and wear comes on the side of the tilt. The old Yoga Rahasya writers (a classic text on the use of yoga for health) said the spine does the same.

Most of us stand more on one foot, sit more on one buttock, let the lower back sink when we sit, and point our two feet in different directions. We do not notice any of this until something feels off.

Dr Krishna Raman is a medical doctor from Chennai, India, who studied yoga with Mr Iyengar and has written about yoga and medicine. He describes the motorbike rider who kick-starts the bike with the same leg for years. In time, the buttock on that side begins to ache. The body does the same job, on the same side, again and again.

Shoulders are the same. Teachers see these common causes again and again:

  • Carrying a bag or child on the same side
  • Using the mouse or phone with the same hand
  • Standing with the weight on one leg
  • Driving with one arm resting on the door
  • Sleeping on the same side every night

None of these is wrong by itself. It is the years of repeating them that build a habit in the body.

Is it just the shoulder?

Rarely. The shoulders sit on the ribs. The ribs sit on the spine. The spine sits on the pelvis. And the pelvis sits on the legs and feet.

So if one hip is higher, or you stand more on one foot, the ribs tilt and one shoulder rides up with them. Fixing only the shoulder is like straightening the roof of a house without checking the walls.

Why one shoulder sits higher. The feet, hips, ribs and arms all play a part, so the whole body is worked on.

That is why Iyengar yoga starts at the feet. Mr BKS Iyengar, the twentieth-century teacher who collected and passed on traditional Indian yoga, was known for his focus on alignment: of muscles, bones and joints, and of the everyday ways we sit and stand.

What did Mr Iyengar see in a famous cricketer?

Justin Langer, the Australian Test opening batsman, toured India with the national team in 2004. In a two-day break he visited Mr Iyengar’s institute in Pune, expecting a quick cup of tea.

Mr Iyengar met him himself. Over tea, he told Langer he could see trouble in his lower back and shoulder, just “by the way you are sitting there”, and took him upstairs. A short visit became a three-hour lesson, with Langer as the model in a room of 20 or 30 students.

Mr Iyengar found tight muscles in the lower back and buttock on one side. He put it down to the long hours Langer spent batting left-handed. He adjusted him with props, through standing poses and then twists. (Retold from a 2005 article in Australian Yoga Life. Langer is a public figure with no connection with Flametree.)

It is a good picture of the idea. One movement, repeated for years, makes one side different from the other. And the answer is not one clever stretch. It is working the whole body, both sides.

What does research say about posture?

The evidence is mixed, and it is worth saying so. Modern research is more cautious about posture than yoga tradition is. Australian back pain experts say posture on its own does not predict who gets back pain.

This is a place where the tradition and the research put things differently, and research may yet catch up. What students tell us in class is simple: when they stand and sit evenly, they feel steadier and move with less strain. So we work on even, balanced standing and sitting for that reason.

How does yoga even out uneven shoulders?

Think in layers, from the ground up.

Evening out from the ground up. Feet, then hips, then chest, then arms, with equal work on both sides.

  1. Feet. Press both feet evenly into the floor, with the toes pointing the same way. The old habit of standing on one leg lets go a little.
  2. Hips. Level the two sides of the pelvis. In class, standing poses and the wall or chair give the hips something to work against.
  3. Chest. Lift the breastbone and open the ribs on both sides. A rounded upper back pulls the shoulders forward.
  4. Arms. Stretch both arms with equal strength, then notice which side is shorter or tighter.

In Iyengar yoga, both sides get equal work. Often the tighter or weaker side gets the teacher’s attention first. The point is for each side to learn from the other.

How are the shoulders and upper back linked?

When the upper back stops doing its share, the neck and the lower back take on its work. Mr Iyengar made this point in 1992 when he taught remedial classes in Australia. A woman called Christina had upper back pain, a stiff neck and headaches. He showed the teachers her rounded upper back.

“So the job that has to be done by the dorsal/thoracic spine is done by the lumbar and the cervical.” In plain words, the upper back (the dorsal or thoracic spine) had stopped carrying its share. The lower back (lumbar) and the neck (cervical) were doing its job as well as their own.

Mr Iyengar did not need her X-ray: “the outside neck tells me”. He gave her Triangle Pose at a pillar with a brick along her upper back.

Rounded shoulders and one-sided habits often go together. If this sounds like you, you may also like our posts on upper back pain, back stretches and forward head posture.

Standing tall, chest lifted. A teacher can see small differences between your two sides that you cannot see yourself.

Why learn this in class?

Because you cannot see your own back. A mirror shows the front, and it shows what you are used to. A teacher sees how the two sides differ, and can use props to help the tighter side open.

Uneven shoulders questions

Are uneven shoulders normal?

Yes. Almost everyone is a little lopsided, because the body does the same job on one side over and over. Most people never notice until it is pointed out.

What causes one shoulder to be higher than the other?

Teachers see the same causes again and again: carrying a bag on one side, using the mouse with one hand, standing on one leg and sleeping on one side. The hips and ribs also matter, since the shoulders sit on top of them.

Can yoga fix uneven shoulders?

Yoga works on the whole body and on both sides equally, and students often feel steadier and more even. Iyengar yoga starts with the feet and hips, then the chest and arms, with a teacher watching.

Which yoga poses help uneven shoulders?

Standing poses such as Mountain Pose and Triangle Pose work the feet, hips and chest. Arm poses such as Cow Face arms show which shoulder is tighter. A teacher chooses what suits you.

Is posture linked to back pain?

Research is more cautious than yoga tradition. Australian back pain experts say posture on its own does not predict who gets back pain. In class, students find that even standing and sitting feel steadier.

Why is one hip higher than the other?

For the same reasons as the shoulders: one-sided habits repeated for years. The hips and shoulders are linked through the spine and ribs, so a teacher works on both together.
