Menopause Belly: Why It Appears And What Iyengar Yoga Does About It

Menopause belly: the short answer

A menopause belly is real, and it is not your fault. In a large US study that followed women through the change, the rate of fat gain doubled when the transition began and muscle began to fall, even though the scales barely moved. That is why the waist thickens first. Iyengar yoga takes a different road from crunches and hard workouts: it builds strength in the legs and hips through standing poses, keeps the belly soft, and rests the body so the change feels less like a fight. Here is the article in short form:

  • At the start of the change, fat gain doubles and muscle falls, even if your weight looks steady.
  • Fat settles around the middle, including deep belly fat.
  • The scales can hide what is happening, so a looser waistband may matter more than a number.
  • Geeta Iyengar’s advice: do not punish your body to lose weight.
  • Standing poses build strength in the legs and hips; crunches and leg lifts can bring on flushes.
  • Small studies of yoga in postmenopausal women found smaller waists, but none proves yoga melts belly fat.
  • Our free Cool, Calm And Strong ebook covers every stage of the change.

A quick word on Iyengar yoga. Iyengar yoga is the style developed by Mr BKS Iyengar. In the 20th century he did more than anyone to set down traditional Indian yoga, through his books and his teaching, and he pioneered the use of props. It is the style we teach at Flametree, in Darwin and live online.

Why does a menopause belly appear?

Oestrogen works all over the body, so its fall shows up in many places, and the middle is one of them. The Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN) is a large American study that has followed thousands of women through the change since 1996. According to PubMed, its researchers scanned women’s bodies year by year and published the result in JCI Insight in 2019 (DOI). At the start of the transition, the rate of fat gain doubled and lean mass declined. Both kept going until about two years after the last period, then levelled off.

Another US study followed 94 women through the transition. According to PubMed, white women gained abdominal fat, including a rise of about 15% in deep belly (visceral) fat, while black women had more abdominal fat before menopause that stayed steady (DOI). It was an observational study, so it describes what happens, not what to do about it. The picture is the same: the middle changes shape.

Why does the scale not move?

The SWAN scans showed no sudden jump in weight at the start of the change. What shifted was the mix: fat went up and muscle went down, at about the same rate, so the total looked steady. The scales can hide what is happening. Muscle is being lost and fat gained at the very time women are often told to just eat less. That is one reason standing poses, which build leg and hip strength, matter so much in these years.

What does Iyengar yoga do differently?

Angie, a Darwin singer, is a good example. She noticed hot flushes, felt more fragile and anxious, and over five years the weight came, mostly round her waist. She took a natural hormone replacement, walked every morning with friends, joined a personal trainer three mornings a week and saw a dietician. In her words, none of it made a difference, and she woke up angry at the thought of the training.

Then she came to Flametree. “Over several months, I lost all that waist that had come with menopause, without even trying,” she says, and she lost about 10 kg in all. But the weight was only part of it. Yoga, she says, “has kept me sane.” Angie’s result is her own, and we do not promise it. It does show a different approach from working harder and eating less.

Geeta Iyengar, Mr Iyengar’s daughter, said the opposite of “work harder”: do not punish your body to lose weight. Women should accept their age and respect it. Iyengar classes are slower, more precise and far more propped. Nobody races from pose to pose, and there is no pressure to keep pace with the room.

Soft on the belly, strong in the legs

Geeta found that muscular effort, a squeezed belly and twisting bring hot flushes on. So in these years the waist, the bones and the pelvis are worked through standing poses instead of crunches. That fits the body science: muscle is falling at exactly this time, and the legs and hips are where standing poses build it.

Yoga for a menopause belly: Warrior II builds strong legs and hips, with the front knee over the ankle

Warrior II. The legs and hips do the work, the back leg is straight and the front knee sits over the ankle.

  • No tummy crunches, no leg lifts. Boat Pose is left out for now. These can bring on flushes.
  • Support the standing poses. Back to the wall, a block under the hand, a chair close by.
  • Rest the head. With the head resting, Geeta said, “there is a kind of coolness.”
  • Shorter stays when the heat comes. The teacher brings you out into something quieter.

Once the body has settled after menopause, you can go back to everything.

The best poses for a menopause belly

Geeta gave women in these years Triangle Pose and Half Moon Pose at the wall above all. “Among these the best is Ardha Chandrasana,” she said, because it takes the heaviness off the lower belly. In Triangle Pose with a chair, the chair brings the floor up to the hand, so both legs can work and the belly stays long, not squeezed. If standing poses are new to you, our guide to yoga for strength and the article on can yoga build muscle explain how your own body becomes the weight.

What do the studies of yoga and waist size show?

The studies are small, so we state them as they are.

  • In a trial of 16 obese postmenopausal Korean women, 8 did yoga for 16 weeks and 8 did no exercise. According to PubMed, waist circumference and visceral fat area fell in the yoga group (DOI).
  • In a quasi-randomised trial (people were put into groups in a way that was close to random) of 139 postmenopausal women, yoga added to brisk walking produced a bigger fall in waist circumference (5.3 cm more) than brisk walking alone over 3 months. According to PubMed, this is from Khandelwal and colleagues (DOI).

Neither study used Iyengar yoga specifically, and neither shows that yoga removes belly fat by itself. What the research supports is a smaller waist alongside better strength, mood and sleep. Questions people ask

Why do I have a menopause belly?

Oestrogen falls, and at the start of the change the rate of fat gain doubles while muscle declines. Fat settles around the middle, including deep belly fat.

Is a menopause belly normal?

Yes. Large studies of women through the change found fat rising and muscle falling, with the middle changing shape.

Why is my weight the same but my waist bigger?

Because fat can replace muscle without the scale moving. The SWAN study found no sudden jump in weight, but fat gain doubled and muscle fell.

Will crunches get rid of a menopause belly?

We do not teach them in these years. Geeta Iyengar found crunches and leg lifts can bring on flushes. Standing poses build strength in the legs and hips instead.

Which yoga poses suit a menopause belly?

Standing poses with support, especially Triangle Pose and Half Moon Pose at the wall, with the belly long and soft and the head resting in the restful poses.

Can yoga reduce menopause belly fat?

Small studies of postmenopausal women found smaller waists after yoga, but no study proves yoga removes belly fat on its own. We do not promise a result.

How long until I notice a change?

Most trials ran 8 to 12 weeks or more, so give it twelve weeks. Angie’s waist changed over several months, and her result is her own.
