Summary: Can you put papaya in the oven?
Papaya’s can be baked in the oven. Place half a papaya in the oven with lime juice inside, & cinnamon sprinkled over it. Cover with foil, & cook for 15-20 minutes at about 200 Celsius, until soft. Cool & serve with coconut yoghurt.
So, any sort of papaya can be baked in your oven. For more detail, follow the baked papaya recipe below.

Papaya’s are not paw paws!
Papaya’s come from North America originally, and are red inside.
Paw paws come from Central America, and are yellow inside.
Papaya’s are more tasty, in my opinion. But both are delicious fruit.
Baked papaya is even better. Use it hot or cold as a dessert, or store and serve cool for a yummy breakfast.
Papaya also gets even redder when you bake, it, as you can see above.
I talked more about the confusion and differences between paw paw and papaya in my paw paw salad recipe.
Ingredients for Darwin papaya, baked in an oven
Here’s all you need so as to put papaya in the oven.
- Medium red Darwin papaya
- 1-2 limes
- Half tsp of cinnamon.
Start by cutting the papaya in half, lengthwise. See the version below, just out of the oven.
Then clean out the seeds.

Making your baked Darwin papaya
Follow the steps below for the very easiest of papaya baking recipes.
- Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees Celsius
- Cut your Darwin papaya, or other papaya, in half
- De-seed it (if you have not already)
- Squeeze the juice of the limes
- Liberally put the lime juice inside the papaya
- Cut 3 lime slices and place inside it inside the papaya (see the pictures below)
- Use a scraper to get half to one tsp of lime skin scrapings off the lime skin (so-called lime zest)
- If it is a juicy lime, then the juice of one lime will be sufficient.
- Otherwise, juice another lime and also add it to the inside of the Darwin papaya
- Add cinnamon sprinkled over the top of the papaya, as you can see in the pictures
- Cover papaya with tin foil, and place on baking tray
- Cook for 10-15 minute in the pre-heated oven
- Check and cook a little more if not fully cooked… using a skewer to check how soft it is
- Cool slightly.
- It can be eaten hot or cold
- Serve with coconut yoghurt.
By the way, the brown marks on the picture below are the cinnamon. The lime juice is in the bottom of the oven baked papaya.
