Iyengar yoga is the style developed by Mr BKS Iyengar. In the 20th century he did more than anyone to set down traditional Indian yoga, through his books and his teaching, and he pioneered the use of props. It is sometimes called modern classical yoga, and it’s the style we teach at Flametree. His daughter Geeta (1944 to 2018) and his son Prashant, who still teaches in Pune, became teachers too.
Who is Prashant S Iyengar?
Prashant S Iyengar is Mr BKS Iyengar’s son, born in 1949. He grew up in Pune with his sisters, including Geeta. The institute in Pune was built in his mother’s name for his father, Geeta and him, and he still teaches in Pune.
Music is part of his story too. The violinist Yehudi Menuhin, his father’s pupil, gave him a violin. At his father’s 70th birthday celebrations in Pune in 1988, the crowd asked him to play it, and he did, for the first time in nearly fifteen years.
Many of his quotes here are about the mind and the breath, not only the body. His books include Chittavijnana of Yogasana, Alpha and Omega of Trikonasana and A Class After a Class.
