Most agree that the falafel, as we know it today, emerged in Egypt.
But, of course, it has been spread across Middle East areas for a very long time.
Ingredients: authentic Egyptian falafel recipe
Here are the main ingredients of authentic Egyptian falafel recipe.
- 2 cups of dry chickpeas
- parsley… one cup
- half cup dill
- 3/4 cup of fresh coriander
- one onion
- 3-5 cloves of garlic
- salt to taste
- a quarter tsp of black pepper
- tsp of cumin
- tsp of coriander
- tsp of cayenne
- tsp of paprika
- half to one tsp of baking powder
- some sesame seeds.
An Egyptian falafel baked recipe gives you flatter, but healthier delights.
How to make authentic Egyptian falafel recipe
- soak chickpeas over night with baking soda
- boil chickpeas with water until cooked and soft… for around an hour and a half. (Must use dry chick peas as it otherwise turns to mush!)
- Wash and drain chickpeas
- add salt to taste
- adjust lid while simmering … so its slightly off… as it will make them creamier
- put in blende… chickpeas, herbs, onion, garlic, spices,
- test consistency. You need to make a ball with your hand… that holds together
- Then put whole mix in fridge for a minimum of one hour
- Make the balls of falafel
- Put a baking paper sheet on your oven tray
- pre-heat oven to 200 degrees Celsius
- Spread the falafel balls onto oven tray
- pour a little olive oil onto the paper around the edges of the tray
- bake for 8 minutes
- flip them
- bake for another 8 minutes or until brown on top
- serve.
The above amounts made 24. So, halve if you have smaller group.
Other tips about your authentic Egyptian falafel recipe
They are best made fresh, as they don’t freeze especially well,
You can freeze them, and then microwave them, but they may dry out more than you like.
There are so many ways to use your Egyptian felafel recipe.
For example, use it for meals like to you see below, or in a wrap for a lunch or an extra snack.

Other option include serving it with other classic Middle Eastern recipes like Tabbouleh. Soon, I’ll with post my gluten free variation of this dish, made with quinoa.
