Balance Classes For Seniors Near Me: Which Yoga Class To Start With In Darwin, And What Happens In It

Balance classes for seniors near me: the short answer

If you live in Darwin and want a class to improve your balance, start with Beginner 1 or Gentle Yoga at Flametree Yoga Studio. Both are taught the Iyengar way, with chairs, walls, blocks and belts so you never have to do a pose that is out of reach. Studio classes are at our Woolner and Coolalinga studios. Some classes also run LIVE online.

Balance is a skill. It is kept by practising it and lost by not practising it. A standing pose held at a wall is balance practice with a safety net.

  • Where to start: Beginner 1 for most people, Gentle Yoga if you want it slower.
  • Where: Woolner and Coolalinga studios, or LIVE online.
  • When: mornings from 8.15am, plus evenings and weekends. Times are below.
  • What to bring: comfortable clothes. Mats and props are supplied free.
  • Cost: 12 classes for $59.50 if you are new, or away for three months or more.
  • The limit: a class trains balance. It is not a promise about your falls.

Standing tall with a chair beside you. This is where many balance classes begin.

Why practise balance on purpose?

Almost nobody practises balance on purpose after about the age of forty. We walk, we stand, we reach, and we hope it stays. A class gives you a safe place to use it.

There is good evidence that balance can be trained. A pilot trial in Sydney tested a 12-week Iyengar yoga program for older people. It had 54 people, with an average age of 68, who did not already do yoga or Tai Chi. They did two classes a week, built around standing poses. Compared with the control group, they improved on standing balance, on one-legged standing with eyes closed, on getting up from a chair and on walking speed. No serious adverse events occurred. The trial was small, and the authors said the effect on falls needs more study.

Which class should a senior start with?

Flametree has three class types that suit a beginner. Most people start with the first.

Three class types on a beginner pass. Most seniors start with Beginner 1 or Gentle Yoga.

  • Beginner 1 is a basic, introductory class for any age, size or fitness level. You learn about 20 to 30 simple standing, sitting and resting poses, using props as you need them.
  • Gentle Yoga is especially easy and slow, with a focus on the back, hips, knees, shoulders and neck. It is good for any age.
  • Restorative Yoga uses many props to hold you in restful poses. At Woolner you need three months of yoga or the teacher’s OK, so it is not a first class.

You do not need to be flexible. You do not need to get down on the floor and stay there. And you do not need to know any Sanskrit.

What happens in your first class?

You turn up in comfortable clothes. Mats and props are already there. Tell the teacher about anything that matters, such as a bad knee or a hip replacement. Then you are shown where to stand.

Poses are taught one at a time and held long enough for you to be taught, not just led. A chair or a wall is offered the moment a pose is out of reach. In a standing pose, a wall is like a handrail you can use until you do not want it.

Here is what a balance class works on, step by step.

  • Standing evenly. Learning where your weight sits on your feet. Most people have never been told.
  • Standing poses at a wall. Warrior II, Triangle and Tree start with a wall or a chair beside you.
  • One leg at a time. Stand on one leg for a few seconds, with a hand on the wall, then a fingertip, then no hand.
  • Getting up and down. Moving to and from the floor happens in class, with props, so it becomes a movement and not an event.

Not sure you are steady enough to start?

That is usually the reason people do come. Tell the teacher before your first class. You will be placed beside a wall, and given a chair for anything done on one leg until you would rather not have it.

Props are not a lesser version of the pose. A standing pose with a block under your hand is a standing pose, done properly, by someone who could not otherwise reach the floor.
