Chickpea Patties With Sweet Potato: Baked, Spicy & Egg Free

Chickpea Patties With Sweet Potato: Baked, Spicy And Egg Free.

A Vegan, Gluten Free Lunch Made With Smashed Chickpeas, Garam Masala And Parsley.

Bakes In 15 To 20 Minutes. Makes About 12 Patties.

Introduction to my chickpea patties

These chickpea patties are smashed chickpeas and grated sweet potato, mixed with shallot, garlic, garam masala, coriander, cumin, sweet paprika and fresh parsley, then baked in a fan forced oven at 200°C for 15 to 20 minutes. Ground flaxseed holds them together instead of egg, so they’re vegan. The recipe makes about 12 patties, which is enough for 2 to 3 people.

I made this recipe up myself. I like these patties because they’re tasty, easy to make and filling. And because they’re baked rather than fried, I think they’re a healthier choice.

I usually eat them for lunch, with a side salad and some hummus or tahini. They’re one of my favourite vegan lunch ideas. They make a good snack too, and you can serve them with lots of different sauces.

Ingredients for chickpea patties

Here are the ingredients for this Flametree Yoga Studio dish. It makes about 12 patties, and feeds 2 to 3 people.

The patties

  • 1 good sized sweet potato, grated
  • A good handful of dried chickpeas, measured before soaking and cooking. Or use 1 tin of chickpeas, drained and rinsed well
  • 1 shallot
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • ½ bunch of continental parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed, for binding

The spices

  • 1 teaspoon of garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon of ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of sweet paprika
  • Salt and pepper
  • Chilli, if you like them hotter

For the tray

  • A little olive oil

I buy organic vegetables here in Darwin. Sweet potato is a great one for us, because according to the Northern Territory Government, it grows well all year in the NT.

How to make chickpea patties

Use these steps to make these chickpea patties.

Step 1: Get the chickpeas ready

  • If you’re using dried chickpeas, soak them overnight. Then cook them for ½ to Âľ of an hour with a touch of salt, and drain them.
  • If you’re using a tin, drain the chickpeas and rinse them well.
  • Smash the chickpeas.

Step 2: Prepare the vegetables

  • Grate the sweet potato.
  • Mince the shallot and garlic.
  • Chop the parsley.

Step 3: Mix

  • Put everything in a bowl with the spices, salt and pepper, and mix it all together. Add some chilli now if you want them spicier.
  • Add the ground flaxseed to bind the mixture.
  • Make sure the mixture isn’t too wet, or the patties won’t hold together.

Step 4: Shape and bake

  • Heat the oven to 200°C, fan forced.
  • Line a baking tray, and sprinkle it with a little olive oil.
  • Shape the mixture into balls, then flatten them a little.
  • Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, turning them halfway through.

Are these chickpea patties vegan and gluten free?

Yes, they’re vegan. There’s no egg or dairy, because the ground flaxseed does the binding.

They’re also gluten free, because chickpeas, sweet potato, flaxseed, herbs and spices are all naturally gluten free. Check the labels on your spices to be sure.

How do you make chickpea patties without egg?

Use ground flaxseed. It goes a little sticky when it’s mixed with the damp sweet potato and chickpeas, and that holds the patties together.

The trick is to keep the mixture from getting too wet. Then flatten the patties a little, and turn them halfway through baking.

Can you fry chickpea patties instead of baking them?

Yes, you can pan fry them. I bake mine, because I think baking is healthier than frying. If you’d like a fried version, try my sweet potato patties, which are shallow fried in a little olive oil.

How much protein is in chickpeas?

Cooked chickpeas have about 8.9 g of protein and 7.6 g of fibre in every 100 g, according to the USDA FoodData Central database. That’s part of why these vegan patties are so filling.

Are chickpea patties the same as falafel?

Not quite. Falafel are usually made from soaked raw chickpeas and deep fried. These patties use cooked chickpeas and grated sweet potato, and they’re baked. If you love falafel, try my Egyptian falafel recipe.

About 12, which is enough for 2 to 3 people.

Can I use pumpkin instead of sweet potato?

Yes. I’ve made them with pumpkin too.

Can I make them spicier?

What do you serve chickpea patties with?

Since the recent retreat we have posted six new recipes on the Flametree recipe page, with the latest one being these chickpea patties just today. Scroll back through the recipes and you’ll see the rest. This is just catching up on the ones that we already had almost finished and Chris is still working on putting up the six new ones she has from this most recent retreat. What I especially like about chickpeas like this is that they are very filling because they are so high in protein. They’re also delicious of course. There’s a movie about growing chickpeas and using them for a range of dishes, including hummus. Made me realise what an incredibly versatile plant and food they are. The movie is called “Make Hummus Not War” and you’ll find it at this link but probably other places as well. https://www.primevideo.com/detail/0K45EWW6V8XA5J6ALBLY2IMYAQ?ref_=atv_sr_fle_c_sr782405_pvsearchresults_1_2
