“I felt I was just enduring my very first yoga lesson. But I went home and slept soundly, for the first time for months.” That was Chris Lalor, in her late thirties, after her mother died. This free ebook on yoga for stress and anxiety explains why it happens, and what the trials show.

Iyengar yoga is the style developed by Mr BKS Iyengar. In the 20th century he did more than anyone to set down traditional Indian yoga, through his books and his teaching, and he pioneered the use of props. It’s the style we teach at Flametree, in Darwin and live online, along with pranayama (yoga breathing).

Cutting Stress With Yoga: Why And How It Delivers. By Chris Lalor, Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher.
What’s inside Cutting Stress With Yoga?
About 65 pages, with photos and simple diagrams. A few of the things you will find:
- “The anxiety goes back in its box.” How Chris, whose mother’s world shrank with worry, keeps her own anxiety in check day to day.
- The head wrap. A gentle Iyengar technique Chris used through grief, and why covering the eyes and forehead quietens a busy head.
- Forty-five minutes of rest. How Mr Iyengar put a worn-out Yehudi Menuhin to sleep in minutes, and started a lifelong friendship.
- A firefighter’s mantra. Three words James now uses with a toddler at breakfast and at a structure fire.
- The newsreader who froze live in front of five million people, and the plain method that finally helped him.
- Mindfulness matched a medicine. What happened when an eight-week course went head to head with a common anti-anxiety drug.
- Close to two extra hours of sleep a night. What 22 insomnia trials found.
- The out-breath is the brake. Why every slow breath out slows the heart a little.
- How we do it at Flametree: active first, then quiet. Forward bends with the head resting. Legs Up The Wall, which Geeta Iyengar called “nectar”. Lively poses by day, quiet ones at night.
- Stress at work. 2 days off for aches and pains against 43, in a trial of hospital staff.
Key findings on yoga for stress and anxiety
- Iyengar yoga, tested directly. In a 2012 Berlin trial of 72 stressed women, three months of Iyengar yoga gave less stress, less anxiety and less low mood than waiting. Once a week worked as well as twice.
- Mindfulness matched a medicine. In a 2023 trial of 276 adults with an anxiety disorder, published in JAMA Psychiatry, an eight-week mindfulness course worked as well as a common anti-anxiety medicine, with far fewer side effects.
- Breathing on its own lowers stress. A 2023 review of 12 trials, with 785 adults, found breath practice lowered stress and eased anxiety and low mood.
- Your heart feels the calm. A 2019 review of 49 trials, with 3,517 people, found yoga lowered blood pressure by about 5 points on the top number and 4 on the bottom. Programmes with breathing and relaxation lowered it about twice as much.

If stress, worry or poor sleep is wearing you down, yoga and breath work help. The trials show it, and we see it in class every week.
Calm is one of the main things yoga is for. The major benefits of yoga that people seek most are more strength, flexibility, calmness and wellness. In the process, by quietening the chatter of the mind, people often find it brings useful transformations, as well as more contentment and happiness.
What the research says
- Yoga lowers stress. A 2025 review of 36 studies found yoga cut how stressed people feel by a moderate amount. The more stressed people were at the start, the more it helped.
- The body shows it too. A review of 42 studies linked yoga poses with lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, lower blood pressure during the day and a slower resting heart rate.
- Iyengar yoga has been tested directly. In a Berlin trial of 72 stressed women, three months of Iyengar yoga gave less stress, less anxiety and less low mood than waiting.
- Yoga eases anxiety and low mood. Reviews pooling many trials found yoga eased anxiety, including in people diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. A BMJ review of 218 exercise trials for depression found yoga among the most effective, and among the easiest to stick with.
- Breathing on its own works. A 2023 review of 12 trials (785 adults) found breath practice lowered stress.
- Yoga helps you sleep. In a 2026 review of 22 insomnia trials, people doing yoga slept close to two extra hours a night in their own sleep diaries, compared with usual care.
- Fitness matters, and so does switching off. A good yoga class gives you both: the first half lifts the heart rate, and the second half trains the body’s brake.
- It works at work, too. In a US workplace trial of 239 employees, a weekly yoga programme lowered stress and improved sleep compared with doing nothing.
- Not yet tested does not mean wrong. Yoga’s knowledge of how to quieten a busy mind has been built and tested in classes for thousands of years. Research is still catching up.
How yoga does it
- It gives the mind one job. A pose done well takes all your attention. There is no room left for worry.
- Active first, then quiet. Standing poses use up nervous energy. Then supported poses let the body settle more deeply than rest alone.
- The long out-breath is the brake. Every slow breath out slows the heart a little.
- Rest the head. Forward bends with the forehead supported quieten a busy head, in the Iyengar tradition and in our experience.
- Turn the body upside down, with support. Legs Up The Wall and Supported Bridge Pose cool and quieten the system.
- Rest is a skill you can learn. Corpse Pose (Savasana) trains you to let go, first in the body, then the nerves, then the mind.
- Lively by day, quiet at night. Strong poses belong earlier in the day. The evening is for supported poses and slow breathing.
- Little and often. The trials used one to three classes a week for two to three months. Many people feel calmer after a single class.

Questions about yoga for stress and anxiety
Is yoga good for stress and anxiety?
Yes. A 2025 review of 36 studies found yoga cut how stressed people feel by a moderate amount, and the more stressed people were at the start, the more it helped. Reviews of many trials also found yoga eased anxiety, including in people diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.
How does deep breathing reduce stress?
Mostly through the out-breath. Every breath in speeds the heart a little and every breath out slows it again, so a longer, slower out-breath presses the body’s brake for longer. A 2023 review of 12 trials with 785 adults found breath practice lowered stress on its own.
How often do I need yoga to feel less stressed?
Once a week is a good start. In a Berlin trial of Iyengar yoga for stressed women, once a week worked as well as twice. Most trials used one to three classes a week for two to three months, and many people feel calmer after a single class.
Is Iyengar yoga relaxing, or is it a workout?
Both, in that order. A class starts standing, which lifts the heart rate and burns off nervous energy, then moves into supported poses and rest. That pattern, active first and then quiet, is what lets the body settle more deeply than rest alone.
Can yoga work as well as medicine for anxiety?
For some people, the related skill of mindfulness did. In a 2023 trial of 276 adults with an anxiety disorder, an eight-week mindfulness course worked as well as a common anti-anxiety medicine, with far fewer side effects. Feel free to check with your professional advisers if you wish, but also give yoga a try.
How much better do people sleep with yoga?
In a 2026 review of 22 insomnia trials, people doing yoga slept close to two extra hours a night in their own sleep diaries, compared with usual care. Supported poses and slow breathing in the evening are part of why.
Does the Darwin build-up make stress worse, and can yoga help?
Many Darwin people feel more tired, short-tempered and wound up in the build-up and the wet. Heat drains energy and sleep often suffers. Restorative poses, supported inversions and slow pranayama are well suited to these months, because they switch the body towards rest. Our gentle, restorative and pranayama classes run all through the hot season.
Where can I do yoga for stress in Darwin?
Any Flametree beginner or non-beginner class helps, at Woolner and Coolalinga or live online. The pranayama (breath meditation), gentle and restorative classes are especially good for stress and sleep. See the beginner timetable. New students get 2 free classes with this offer.
