Mindfulness Manual Review: Netflix’s Korean Series On Breath And The Brain

Mindfulness Manual on Netflix: the short version

A professional baseball player strikes out twice, sits on the bench with his eyes shut for a minute, then hits two home runs in the same game. That is how Mindfulness Manual (2024), a three part Korean series on Netflix, opens. It shows how Korea now uses breath meditation in universities, schools and big companies, explains what scientists think happens in the brain, and follows five volunteers through a seven week experiment. It is clear, modern and refreshingly honest about side effects.

Mindfulness Manual in short form

  • What it is: a Korean documentary series, three episodes of about 55 minutes.
  • Big idea: the breath is the one body signal we can steer on purpose.
  • Best part: the expert meditators who wait calmly for pain.
  • The science: brain scans and a small five person experiment.
  • Where to watch: Netflix, with English subtitles.
  • Our verdict: worth it, especially episodes one and two.

What is Mindfulness Manual about?

It is about mindfulness meditation as practised in Korea, drawing on Buddhist roots and on clinical courses such as MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction). Breath meditation here means watching the natural breath, not controlling it.

Episode one looks at the busy brain and how meditation quiets it. Episode two covers attention, creativity and pain, with a visit to schools that start the day with a few minutes of breathing. Episode three follows five volunteers who meditate for 20 minutes twice a day for seven weeks, with brain scans and stress hormone tests before and after.

Key highlights

  • Three minutes a morning. A Seoul high school starts every day with three minutes of breathing meditation, to help students settle and concentrate.
  • The busy mind. A professor says the mind changes its mind about every ten seconds.
  • Waiting for pain. In Richard Davidson’s lab, beginners tensed up at a warning beep before heat touched their wrist. Long-term meditators stayed calm, felt the heat fully, then settled quickly.
  • Noticing is the practice. People who say “I couldn’t stop thinking” are told that noticing the distraction was the meditation.

The science it draws on

These are the series’ own claims. Most come without the name of a paper, so treat them as pointers.

  • Breath and emotion. A hospital professor says breathing is the only body signal we can control on purpose, and that it is closely wired to the brain’s emotion circuits. Changing its rhythm can make pain more bearable.
  • The stuck stress switch. Chronic stress is described as a sympathetic nervous system (the fight or flight side) that will not switch off. Meditation brings in the parasympathetic side (rest and recover).
  • The default mode network. This is the brain network that chatters when we are at rest. Scientists in the series say meditation quiets it.
  • The seven week experiment. After seven weeks, brain scans showed less activity in a key default mode area and more in the brain’s control network. One firefighter’s normal morning stress hormone rhythm returned.

The limits. The experiment had five people and no control group, so it shows what happened to them, not what meditation does for everyone. The series also gives one brain energy figure that is a little higher than the usual textbook number.

Key stories in the series

Breathing through labour. A first-time mother uses breathing through an 11 hour birth without pain relief. She says it worked until she lost the rhythm, and then it hurt a lot. Honest, not a miracle.

When practice stirs things up. One volunteer, already grieving, found the practice made her feel worse for a while. The series stops to talk about side effects, and a professor warns that even meditation can do harm if it is overdone. She later felt better.

The freediver. A freediver treats breath holding as a form of meditation. She calls freediving a journey between two breaths.

How it fits what we teach at Flametree

This is a mindfulness series, so its findings are about mindfulness, not yoga. We take them as outside support, not as proof that yoga does the same.

Iyengar yoga is the style developed by Mr BKS Iyengar. In the 20th century he did more than anyone to set down traditional Indian yoga, through his books and his teaching, and he pioneered the use of props. It is sometimes called modern classical yoga, and it’s the style we teach at Flametree.

The series watches the natural breath. In pranayama (yogic breathing) the breath is gently shaped and lengthened, after the poses have opened the chest. Both lead toward the calm, rest and recover side of the nervous system. And like the series, we would rather you went at your own pace: if anything is stirring you up, tell your teacher. Read more in our notes on calming the nervous system and what pranayama is.

Where to watch Mindfulness Manual in Australia

We watched it on Netflix in Australia with English subtitles in October 2026. Some English-language interviews have no subtitles.
