Yoga for sleep through the Darwin Build-up
Everyone here knows the Build-up. The air thickens, the nights stop cooling off, and by late October half of Darwin is lying awake at two in the morning with the fan going.
This is a half price pass for twelve classes, built for people who want something to do about that. Ten classes at half price, plus two free.
You already know the feeling
See how many of these you recognise. You do not need all of them. Two is enough.
- You get into bed tired and your head starts up the moment it hits the pillow.
- You wake at three, and the first thing you think about is work.
- You have started going to bed earlier to make up for it, and it has not helped.
- The fan is on, the aircon is on, and you are still lying on top of the sheet.
- You are short with people by Thursday and you know exactly why.
- Your phone is the last thing you look at, and you know that is not helping either.
Most people try to fix this at bedtime. That is the wrong end of the day
By the time you are in bed, the day has already happened. What a class does is give your body something demanding enough to hold your whole attention for an hour, and then wind it down on purpose. You leave quieter than you arrived.
Chris Lalor still tells people about her own first class. She was so stiff she could do little more than tilt her head forward. She went home and slept soundly, for the first time in months. That is not a promise about what will happen to you. It is why she has spent the last 29 years teaching this.
What actually happens, class by class
- Your first class. You turn up in comfortable clothes. Mats and props are already there. Nobody asks you to do anything you have not been shown. You will be taught where to put your feet, what to do with your breath, and when to stop. Most people are surprised how much of it is standing up.
- By class three. The poses stop being a puzzle. You start noticing the difference between a body that is working and a body that is straining, which is the single most useful thing yoga teaches.
- By class six. This is usually where people say something about their sleep without being asked. It is also where the supported poses start to feel like a relief rather than an oddity.
- By class ten. You have a handful of things you can do at home in ten minutes, on a night when you can feel it coming.
Your pass also covers Gentle Yoga, Restorative Yoga, meditation and Yoga for Backs. In the Build-up, the restorative and meditation classes are the ones people reach for.
Three reasons this suits a hot Darwin night
Nothing about it is heating. No hot room, no music, no rushing. A lot of what you do is held still, and some of it is done lying down with a bolster under you.
You can do it from home. Every class runs LIVE online as well as in the studio, on the same pass. When the storms come in and you cannot face the drive, you do not lose the class.
There is a teacher watching. Not a video. Somebody who can see that your shoulders are up around your ears and tell you so.

What you get for $59.50

- Gentle Yoga, Restorative Yoga, meditation and Yoga for Backs all included, at no extra cost
- Props and mats supplied free at every studio, so you turn up with nothing but comfortable clothes

- Valid for 6 months from your first class, which is plenty of time to build the habit
- Money back guarantee on your first class, so trying it costs you nothing but an hour

Why the Iyengar way suits this
Props are the whole difference. Blocks, belts, blankets, chairs and the wall are used so the pose is adjusted to your body today, rather than you being adjusted to the pose.
That matters most in the poses that quieten people down, because those only work if you can stay in them comfortably for a few minutes. Propped properly, a forward bend over a chair is restful. Unpropped, it is just hard work.
The teaching is slow and precise, the sequencing is built for real bodies including stiff and older ones, and there is no heat, no music and nobody competing with you.
What changes if you come
Six weeks from now you will either have done this and know what an hour of it does to your evening, or it will be six weeks later, the Build-up will be further along, and the three o’clock wake-up will be the same three o’clock wake-up.
That is genuinely the whole choice. It costs $59.50 and your first class is refundable.
Questions people ask before they start
Can I try a class before I buy anything?
Yes. Your first class is free if you are new to Flametree and you have been in the Territory three months or more, and for online newcomers as well. There is nothing you have to arrange. It does help if you let us know you are coming, because then your details are already in the system and you can walk straight into the class instead of filling anything in at the door.
I am not flexible at all. Is that a problem?
No. Flexibility is what comes out of it, not what gets you in. Most people who walk in for the first time are stiff, and the props exist precisely so that stiff bodies can do the poses properly.
Will an evening class wake me up rather than settle me?
The evening classes are built to finish quiet. They move first and wind down second, and they end lying still. If you would rather not practise late at all, the morning classes are on the same pass.
What if I cannot get in during the wet?
Join the same class online from home. Go to the timetable, click the class time you want, and we email you the link to join. The link arrives straight away and a reminder comes about half an hour before.
How long does the pass last?
Six months from your first class. No monthly payments, nothing to cancel.
Is this right for everyone?
No. If you have had surgery in the last six weeks, or you are in acute pain right now, this is not the right starting point. Email us first and we will suggest something better. And if you want a fast, sweaty, music-driven class, this is honestly not that. It is slower, more precise and more individual.
