Chris Lalor, Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher & Yoga Therapist, and founder of Flametree, in Mountain Pose (Tadasana).

Why Iyengar yoga

Iyengar yoga is the style developed by Mr BKS Iyengar. In the 20th century he did more than anyone to set down traditional Indian yoga, through his books and his teaching, and he pioneered the use of props. It’s the style we teach at Flametree.

The props (blocks, belts, chairs and blankets) bring each pose to you. So you don’t need to be flexible, fit or young to start. Being stiff is the reason to come, not a reason to wait.

Our teachers are certified Iyengar teachers. Iyengar teachers train for a minimum of three years and are only certified after an independent assessment.

“Exceptional teaching at Flametree. Highly trained teachers who have spent many years obtaining their qualifications. I particularly like that they have an acute understanding and articulate how the asanas – when aligned properly – positively impact the body and still the mind rather than yoga just being a physical activity. Highly recommended.”

What a class is like

Every class has a shape. The first half is more active: standing poses that build strength in your legs and steadiness in your feet.

The second half is calmer. Supported poses, then a rest lying down at the end. Most people leave calmer than they came in.

The teacher shows each pose, then comes round and helps you. Nobody will ask you to stand on your head. We start with the basics, done well.

What to bring: nothing at all in the studio. Mats and props are there for you. Wear something comfortable you can move in. You’ll be in bare feet.

“Great teachers Iyengar style and good for all bodies no matter how stiff.”

Questions people ask

Should I choose beginner or non-beginner?

If you’re new to yoga, or it’s been a while, choose beginner. Most people do. If you’re ready to move up after a class or two, we can credit your beginner pass towards a non-beginner one.

Do I need to be flexible or fit?

No. The props bring each pose to you, and each class is adjusted for who is in the room. Being stiff is the reason to come.

Can I mix studio and online classes?

Yes. One pass works at Woolner, at Coolalinga and live online, in any mix you like.

How do I join an online class?

Click the class time you want on our class list, using the email you bought with. We email you the link to join straight away, and a reminder comes about half an hour before.

How long does my pass last?

Every pass lasts 6 months, including any add-on classes.

What is the add-on?

When you check out, you can tick a box for more classes at the same low rate. They go onto the same pass.

How do I get my free ebooks?

We email your free books after you buy. A 10 class deal comes with 1 free ebook. A 20 class deal comes with 2, or 3 if you add the 10 class add-on (32 classes).

What if it’s not for me?

Then you get your money back. Buy the pass and try your first class. If it’s not the right fit, you get a full refund.
