How I changed my mind about pranayama

“…When I first encountered pranayama (also known as breath meditation), I thought it was a complete waste of time.

I had been taking classes for a couple of years and had just found the instructor I later came to see as my first “real” yoga teacher. (Hint… she was from the Iyengar style of yoga).

One day she announced to the class, “Today we’re going to do some pranayama.” Huh? I thought. What’s that? Prana—what?

We did some simple resting poses and then some very basic breath-awareness exercises, followed by Savasana (Corpse Pose).

I wasn’t thrilled. I wanted a workout, to get strong and stretched out.

…But my real luck lay in my teacher’s dogged persistence. Month after month, she kept teaching pranayama, and month after month I kept resisting it—though I did occasionally show up for class.

…And then one day something inside me suddenly clicked, and I changed my mind.”

This story is from Tony Briggs. I myself use pranayama (aka breath meditation) to meditate in Darwin, and online. But wherever students are, they have sometimes said much the same thing to me.

Pranayama (aka breath meditation) increased my emotional control, attention, & self-awareness, & reduced fear. Many years later, I know why. I wish someone had told me about “prana”. I outline it below. 

Science can now explain why it works

In his story in the Yoga Journal, Tony goes on to say.

“… Many people are aware of the theory in modern physics that matter and energy are just different manifestations of the same thing.

So one way to look at the body or body-mind is as a cloud of energy—a cloud of energy so concentrated that it’s visible.

Prana is just another word for that energy. Prana is the energy that moves the universe, or that is the universe.

So pranayama—literally, “control of prana”—isn’t just breathing exercises.

Through pranayama, you use the breath to affect the constellation of energy that is your body-mind.”

All of this is a key reason that pranayama gives you energy.

Tony also talks about some other key benefits he go from breath meditation:

“… Despite my original dislike of pranayama, I can testify that it’s worth your effort.

After a while, I began to notice that during the 15 or 20 minutes I was practising, I felt calmer, quieter, more centred, more in touch with the pulses of my breath, body, and mind.”

The free passes are for free for two groups of people. First, they are free for existing Flametree students who’ve never done pranayama with me (or Flametree) before.

Second, there are ten free classes for students who are entirely new to Flametree.

To do pranayama classes, including to use this free offer, you also need to have completed 6 weeks of Flametree’s beginner level classes, or their equivalent. In other words, you need to be a non-beginner at yoga.

The reason is that you need to build some strength and openness in the lungs. That will then allow you to get more from pranayama, and do it effectively.

Breath meditation, or pranayama also works well when done lying down. That means it is easier to start and do for longer periods. Try it.

2 classes each week, online or in Darwin
